Today, for no reason at all, my tach began to operate on a parttime basis. Sometimes it would just quit then start again. Later on it began to work OK. Any ideas. thanks

my problem

I had something like this happen to me. I also noticed that the truck was not running well (rough). The engine light was also set. The cause of all this was a bad crankshaft position sensor. If your is a 24 valve, this could be what it is. It was a $40 part from Cummins. I even replaced it myself (DC would cover it under warranty).

Try adjusting the space between the pickup and the balancer. Mine was doing something similar when I fixed my kdp. I reduced the space and then all was well. :)

erratic tach operation

CAnderson,

Thanks for the reply. I haven't the faintest Idea where or what the pickup or balancer are. Please educate me. Thanks.

Look down below the fan and you will see the vibration damper. Looks like a small flywheel on the front of the crankshaft. It has notches cut into it about 90 degrees apart. Look closely and you will see a little sensor positioned at about 11 'o' clock. (Just going from memory) That part has a wire coming out of it, easy to spot. It is adjustable for distance to the damper. Take something about the thickness of a business card or a thin piece of cardboard, place it under the sensor, loosen the sensor, push it against your cardboard and tighten it up again. It should work fine. That's how I adjusted mine after the KDP fix.
