A code question.

If my truck throws an error code, let's say a P0230 (lift pump), and I replace the lift pump thereby fixing the problem/code, will the code go away or does it have to be cleared with a scan tool?

Now, let's say it also set a P1693 in both PCU & ECU thereby lighting the MIL. Once the offense is corrected it seems that the MIL will go out but the codes remain until cleared.

The curious part, and the reason I'm asking these questions with a puzzled look on my face, is that the scan tool reported no codes even though the odo showed PCU P0500, P1693, ECU P0521, P0230 and P1693.

So, am I dealing with what was and what is depending on how I examine it?

Been out of the buis for a few yrs but soft codes [ lite only comes on when the computer sees a problem ] then lite goes out after problem goes away, but still may be in history .
Hard codes [ once a problem occurs the lite stays on , even after repair , also in history ] .
Not sure what yrs but some need scanner to remove , some yrs disconnect battery , but that also sets a code .

If the odometer shows codes, then you have codes. I think your scanner can't read the Dodge system. Do you know anyone with a Smarty? If not, you can get an autoparts store to clear the codes and then see if they return.

When I first had the dreaded P0216 code, I new what was happening. But to try to end the dead peddle,I tried the APPS reset by disconnecting the batterys and turning on the key. The next day the code wasnt there at the dealers

and their master tech said that the code was cleared due to that battery disconect because the hand held reader only showed 3 starts on the reader. We restarted it 4 or 5 more times and drove it hard and it threw the code again and the dead peddle came back. That sinched it and I got the new in-tank lift pump and VP44 on warrantee. ( that was 33k miles ago).

Thanks for the feedback.

It's interesting to note that my scanner will clear the codes (and they have not returned) but it wasn't showing them.

That might still mean that it can't read them... or... . the dash is showing the history since last cleared even though the codes aren't there anymore to be read by the scanner.

I'll have to force a code and see if the scanner can read it to be sure.

Smarty... . I didn't know that it was a code scanner as well as parameter modifier. I'm not looking for more power (yeah, I'm weird :-laf ) but I would be interested in setting up more economy. (read more mpg). Most loads I have are light. <3000 and minimal air drag. Maybe consider it if my scanner actually can't read the codes.
