I already installed mine. Installation is a little tough, wait for a nice weekend. I paid 1,000$ for it at the national rally in the vendor fair. That was back in august at the columbus rally. I sent away for the remote for an additional 150$. They should be able to meet that price. This is the D4W kit with the seven day timer and the special brackets and fuel fittings for dodge. I have not seen the shadetree mechanic show yet- I guess he put his timer/control in the glove box?, I put it by the 4wd shift lever. Watch those knucles in shifting to 4 low if you go that way.

Pete,
How do you like your Espar heater so far?. Is it worth the money? Does it warm up the coolent better than the OE block heater?

------------------
Signature went with the "crash". . out in cyber space somewhere...

Pete,
Did you lift the bed or drop the tank to install the ESPAR fuel line?

Do you see the electric load effect energy available for starting?

What is the longest you have ran the ESPAR between engine starts?

HVAC,
let's see if we can come up with a good #ad
reason to make the ESPAR a performance product... ... #ad

Hmm,
preheating the vehicle before a pulloff will decrease the thermal shock from the launch. . naaaa

you can save fuel while in line behind all those other BOMBERS at the dyno on a cold day, since we know cold air is more better... naaaa

a comfortable bride may not want to leave the warm cab to see how much is being spent inside the speed shop... maybe...

anyone else... .

Thank you david for looking in to this. I have been researhing this for a month there are a couple people up here that have them. I am going to get one just been trying to get the price down, quote I received up here is 1495. including remote. This is a great little unit coolent temp is higher than block heater below 0 temp. Burns 4-8 oz per hour, as compared to truck at idle cosumes 1 gal in 1hr 10 mins. It can be run while driving. If you let your truck run at idle very long over fueling can wash down the rings. stops this problem. It hooks in to the heater blower to keep the cab warm. Up here (Fairbanks, Alaska) at idle below -20 you can not get any cab heat, at -30 to -50+ the temp gauge doesn't come off the peg even with a sheet of cardboard between the rad and intercooler. If we could work out some way to get the discount by dealing direct with your dealer. Long story short count me in!!! Richard
PS Espar what is the duty cycle; what temp will the coolent be at low med Hi when the air temp is -20.

Sorry it took so long to answer. First thing is I do like it. The temperature guage still does not read when it is started. But the cab is toasty warm. On cold days there is enough heat in the engine bay to indirectly warm the manifold. I can tell this by the amount of time the wait to start light goes out. 5 seconds instead of a minute. On the raod the engine is warm in about a mile ( reading on the guage) instead of around three or four miles. It totally beats out the block heater. No cords etc. to remember to plug in and unplug (the whole point is to minimize the amount of cold weather labor). It may pull the battery down slightly but it seems to be more than offset by the easier cranking. The timer can be preset to start at a certain time on any particular day. It will run for up to 120 minutes which is also adjustable. To put the fuel supply tube in I dropped out the fuel tank. At the same time I was installing a 50 gallon replacement tank from AERO tanks ( I cannot reccomend them, the attention to detail was not there). I used the same float/sender/fuel sock assembly. A part that replaced the stock "tank pump out connection" was supplied. It added the fuel tube for the heater and retained the pump out connection. It has several good features. The controls will kick out if there is a voltage problem. When fuel is below 1/4 tank it will loose suction and stop. It will reprime itself when you refill and restart the heater. The price may be steep but it is a very well thought out product for our application. Many thins you buy can be "made to fit", this actually fits. As an example- the fuel tube to the lift pump would interfere. A new fuel tube banjo fitting was included to move the suction line out of the way. The bracket puts the heater in a spot that you think nothing can go there but it does with room to spare. As far as cost/benefit? How resistannt or annoyed by cold are you. How often do you scrape ice off windows? How willing are you to spend possibly a weekend under the truck? But at least you know that you get what you pay for. This is NOT junk.
BTW- This was one of the things I thought was most worth it. ( notheast winter). Related string from the board when there was interest last fall- also some installation tips (from me) https://www.turbodieselregister.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/000139.html

Got this from ESPAR Headquarters:
It is very nearly an add #ad
, but it does go to the issue at hand. .
I will get with the webmaster before posting the letter from ESPAR's President, as I don't want to violate the Forum rules. However I do want us to get a good deal #ad

TO ESPAR, if you give us an aggressive group price we can not post the price to the public but will share the price offer via email to those interested. (Unless the webmaster tells me otherwise)
----------------------The following is from ESPAR--------
Espar has taken a keen interest in watching the thread.
Stay tuned for a letter from our President.

Espar provides kits for the
Dodge 12 valve
Dodge 24 valve including 2000 build dates and up
Ford 250/350
- 4 wheel drive 4 wheel ABS
- 2 wheel drive 4 wheel ABS

Because of the generated interest from the Shade Tree Mechanic Show we
are currently building a universal kit that will be able to be adapted
for some of the older model pick ups.

Clarification on the 24v model:
==========================
Good Morning David,

We support 98 and up including the 2000 models.
The sending unit in the fuel tank has changed on the 2000 models so we
had to adapt the Espar kit slightly to include a grommet for the new
sending units. If you are interested in taking a look at the
installation manuals for the Dodge kits or for the Ford kit please have
a look at the technical manual section of our web site. http://www.espar.com
I have uploaded the entire manuals in PDF format.

SCOTT1, I got that funny feeling we are heading back towards where you got with these folks...

I just forwarded this thread to both Paul Dennehy of ESPAR corporate comunications and to Brian Sheridan of the local distributor here.

Let's give them a few days to respond.

Spring is about 38 days away
I don't know about anyone else but the window is closing fast for my interest in this without a quick positive response from ESPAR.

Seems like they show a bit of interest but then back off on committing to a price.
I had to let it go up here cuz they seemed to want me to chase them more and more. I have other things to do with my time and I guess they do to.
Hope you get an answer... eventually.

SCOTT
Like you said... the window is closing.

Scott1,
I suspect it is now made worse by them underestimating the interest from the TV show. Also there is the rumor that phord will start to offer them as an OEM option.

If they had a website with direct sales for the comsumer, it would be a far better business model than this nearly obsolete distributor setup.

I have to wonder what kind of liablity exposure ESPAR has. Imagine leaving your truck at home while away on a trip and your wife trying to do the right thing and bringing your truck into the garage during a storm. The 7 day timer kicks on and starts to fill your attached garage with Carbon Monoxide. Maybe there is some kind of safety thing to prevent this or maybe it burns so little that it is a non-issue, but if not... .

The same thing could maybe happen if you left your truck at a service garage for the weekend. Kind of like the remote starters that have a temp activation cycle.

Hello all, just got this from ESPAR:
--------
Regading your email dated 02/14/2000 in the TDR chat room addressing
concerns of attached.

After presenting your concerns to our Techincal department, i offer you
this response.
When installed as per instructions the heater will only run on the
default setting for 2 hrs.
The heater will also run a max of 2 hrs. using the Key FOB remote start.
These run times can be changed manually to a lesser run time but no
more.

Hydronic 4 emmissions are very low.
Worst case: 4 grams/hr CO, the heater would never run at this power
level for 2 hours because once the heater brings the engine up to
temperature it cycles into low. So the average output would be 2. 5 gr/hr
CO

This is very low and would not do anyone any harm.

These are valid questions you have raised and i hope i have addressed
your concerns.

I will be issuing a letter from our President tommorow regarding special
pricing and the parameters involved (limited offer) to your group on TDR
and all other interested parties that have shown interest in our Product
since the Airing or the "Shade Tree Mechanic Show"
