Waiting for Cummins Engines?

Has anyone installed an Espar on an 03 or 04 truck? If so what issues were encountered? How about a Webasto?

Ordered an 04 on 9/25 (shipping date 11/06) and looking to move my Espar over to the new truck.

4 years of using it, I must say I am rather spoiled.

Transfered mine from my 96 to my 03. Had to mount it under the

passenger's floor as underhood room is tight. As yourself I am spoiled.

Espar on 3G

I have an appointment to get one installed on the 10th. in Calgary. They have done several installs on the 3rd. gens. I had one on my 94 and I miss it a lot even though it not real cold yet. Having a warm cab and clear windows is as much of a benefit as a warm engine. I will let you know how the install goes next week. I am having the Espar dealer do the complete install as they know what they are doing and have the help to do it.

canadians can get rebate on pre heaters

just was looking around the espar website, and noticed that the canadian goverment is issuing a 19% rebate [up to $350 cdn] on engine preheaters/cab heaters to reduse idling of vehicles. i was thinking of a webasto heater for my truck, but if a 19% credit is avalable on the espar units, i'll strongly think about them. here is a link to espar's press release on the topic http://www.espar.com/htm/specials/pressrelease.htm

Dan. Poitras:

Several Questions:

1) What did you mount the espar unit to under the passenger side?

2) Where did you plumb the intake/outflow coolant runs on the block?

3) Any issues with the fuel tank or is it the same as a 96?

4) Any problems with wiring in the blower for in cab heat?

Thanks in advance

Alaskaskiff,

In answer to your questions

1)Mounted the espar to the frame rail

2)The espar supply comes from the heater hose at the rear of the head

The espar return goes to the heater core (this is where the rear

heater hose originally went)

3)Contrary to what Espar recommends I always tap into the engine's fuel supply (I've got lots of fuel and and it will never run out since I always keep it full in the winter)

4)Wiring in the blower is no problem (same as 96)

5)If the unit is 4 years old this would be a good time to replace

It's glow plug while it is out.

Dan. Poitras,

You are right on about the glow plug, mine died last winter of course when it was about 5 degrees Fahrenheit.

Installing like you describe for the coolant plumbing sounds much easier than before.

I actually added a ball valve to my 96 so I could pull the Espar without draining the coolant.

Where exactly did you hook into the fuel system?

Thank you for answering my questions.

i second the glow plug ,mine went at 5 years of use and now this year it seem that my flame sensor is bad i keep getting fault 51,i did not have time to take out but it is getting colder(i know not as cold here as some of you other guys are seeing) and will have to do soon. i will never be without one on my truck i love it!

I installed a T fitting at the engine fuel supply line ahead of the trans crossmember. Try to use a plastic or composite tee as a steel, one may tend to freeze at -30

Espar's Hydronic D4 coolant heater

A couple of questions, Is there a timer you can run to turn the thing on 10 minutes or so before you get off work or something like that?

How much?

Where can I go in the Midwest(IA) to get one or get one installed?

My truck seems to take much longer to warm up down the same road I've driving for 20 some years compared to alot of different diesels and gassers.

I was quoted a price of $2500. 00 Canadian dollars installed. This includes the heater, controller and in cab wiring to the heating system. I am having this done on Monday the 10th. I will report on the install next week. Yes they come with a controller. The one I had on my 94 had a 2 week timer with a flexible program. You could have more than one start time. You could turn the unit off and on from in cab by the push of a button.

That would be about $1700 US? ouch! If some shop nearby could convice of an install, I'd might just do it. Any Quad Cities(Moline Ill-Davenport IA) shops out there?

gary landuyt has them, along with amsoil products. his website is the one above. he has them going for sub $1000 for the kit, and wants a few hundred if they install it...

not affilaiated in any way, just pointing out another sourse

[i'm gonna need to find a sourse for an espar or webasto myself soon that is more local to me than the usa]

My espar was $1000 when I bought it, with another $150 later when I got the remote.

The timer that comes with it holds 3 settings and can be specified up to seven days in advance.

Really nice for leaving the truck at the airport for several days during travel and knowing what time you are coming back and having truck warm when you get in!

The espar website has a comprehensive list of dealers. I bought my unit from espar of Michigan (Romulus).

Got the new Espar installed yesterday at Polar Mobility Research in Calgary. I opted for the Hydronic D5W model. The unit is mounted under the air box (AFE Megacannon). They ran the fuel supply to the tank and placed the fuel pump at the tank. They told me that having the pump at the tank helped prevent fuel supply problems to the heater. They also wired into the heater blower circuit in cab. The controll panel is mounted on the knee panel to the left of steering column. I think they did a good job of the install. They have done several of these units and seem to know what they are doing. I see in previous posts that some of you are having problems finding a source for these heaters. Try checking out your Cummins stores or any large truck dealers as a lot of these places sell and install Espars. I got home real late and we woke up to another winter storm so I will really get to enjoy this unit right away.

Hi, I wish there was some place nearby. I called a dealer in Davenport IA which is pretty close. They were involved with semis but not pickups. Sounded real ignorant. I don't think it would be good idea to have a place like that do a install. Did they tap into the trucks fuel tank?
