Dumb question(s).
The remote wiring diagram shows the red wire going into slot #11 which is the same slot for the red for the 7 day timer.

The Black on the remote goes to #12 which is the slot for brown on the 7 day timer.

The question is---Are these shared slots which the wires will have to be spliced or remote replaces 7 day wires? :confused.

Also does any one have suggestions for placing the receiver and the antenna? I would like the antenna to be out of sight.
Many thanks in advance!

I have an opinion after installing the bracket, hoses, etc I would think you would be able to pass the dexterity test for getting into dentistry school!! #ad

Bert, I am as confused as you. Been looking at the Reciever remote instructions. Will 2 wires fit into the terminal ends?. Maybe we are supposed to splice the two together and use the new terminal ends that come with the reciever/transmitter kit? Or remove the wire that are in those slots now? A lotta help I am #ad

How is the installation going so far? Are the terminals easy to crimp on the wire ends?
Did your white connector go into the reciever? Mine won`t. A piece of plastic needs to be filed down.
We need to get an EASPAR INSTALLATION THREAD started!

Keep us posted! #ad

They said to use their phone support, anyone try it?

My . 02 : the piggyback wires are just providing 12V to the remote box. If ESPAR does not give you any advice, I would just splice them following the wiring guide.

As to the antenna location, it looks like the same unit on my old remote starter. They buried that far inside my dashboard, so I'd think you could put that thing anywhere you wanted to.

Again, just my . 02

I figure this IS the installation thread!!

Dave,

I`m fighting with "Dave Boslooper". He refuses to credit me on the Sales tax. He sez "everybody got charged sales tax".

Most everybody knows out-of-state mail orders are exempt for sales tax.

I left him a stern voicemail message this morning that if I`m not credited 60 bucks for sales tax... the heater is going back.

I hope it does not come to this #ad

Sorry bout the rambling #ad

Installation not going to wrong. Taking my time an figuring out things ahead of doing it. The white connector fit ok. I always have trouble with the red type smash on, probably need a tool other than a pair of pliers! My hot wire is a larger guage than the red connector would like. I have all the pluming complete and the wires are run thru the dash. Instructions neglected to state remove the dash instrument bezel and then remove the 2 bolts holding the radio. It may be possible to fit two striped wires into one connector. There are 4 wires on the remote and I was supplied with 3 connectors!

I will leave the fuel tank pleasure for a later date as it is 60gals and is next to full.

For now I will hold off on completing the 7 day and remote and do the heater wire and button up the dash before I forget how it is done! I referenced the Dodge service manual for dash, radio etc.

ONE THING I did notice--I have a copy of the on-line instructions which tell how long to make the intake and exhaust pipe! (measurements not contained in instructions sent with the product) No big deal, but when you are laying on your back looking up under the truck measuring it would have been nicer on the bench.

Watch the hoses to see they don't interfere with the accelerator! My inlet hose should have aprox 2" trimmed off at the heater.

Looking forward to having it function.

David_Vt,

The sugestion of the antenna in the dash sounds ok. I had visions of running up the
A pillar, not good!

I will call the 800 number listed in the instructions an see what is up with the remote!

Bert

Just emailed the marketing guy who set this up (in Canada). He has been very responsive, so hopefully he can make the tax thing go away or at least council Dave on the way things should be... .

As to the antenna, experiment with range of activation before you nail down the antenna location. A visit to a car alarm dealer might offer some suggestions as to antenna placement. Let us know what you find out, I have the same questions...

Remember that ESPAR is very interested in our feedback regarding the installation. Their going to raffle off the equivalent of several ESPAR units (2nd unit or cash) to the people who send in the installation feedback.

Be straight with them (and constructive). It will likely benefit those who follow... #ad

I suspect the rational for the group discount was to help build the case to go to a direct marketing sales model for the ESPAR units, thus you are sort of part of a beta test on how it will work.

Go back to their webpage and read the President's letter.

I'll be installing mine on the 22nd.

Bert,

What size drill bit did you use to drill for the wiring harness in the firewall? Where about did you drill the hole? I have a 5 speed truck too.

David, Thanks for doing more legwork for us w/ Espar. You have done a Great job!. You have done too much. Can`t thank you enough. #ad
. Michigan Espar does not have a clue about direct sales, via shipping. Everything was just thrown into a flimsy cardboard box. Billing errors too. Main thing is heater was manufactued in Germany. That usally equals quality. #ad

Is it snowing up there? It is here. #ad

How are your Traction bar mounts coming along? You probably could have the mounting holes elongated to give you more adjustment.

David & Bill

I checked the online installation manual this morning! (good time to compare after almost complete except fuel tank). The online version is NOVEMBER 98, the one I received is APRIL 98.
I was curious about cutting the blue wire at the heater motor as they did not supply any connecters! The online instructions shows disconecting the heater wires and plugging in the ones supplied. They have on their wireing a pink? and a white connector. The Dodge connectors to the motor will fit into these! So no wire cutting!. It is easier to disconnect when glove box is removed as there is an access hole which exposes the connection.

The drill bit size is 17. 5 mm or 11/16 my language! Didn't have one, $24 later, have one. Didn't like the price.

I drilled slightly below the steering column.
#ad
It HURT to drill a hole!! Not many places to drill. A long bit would have been better but would need an FHA loan! It is a little close drilling and the drill has a tendency to bust your jaws if you have it too close when it breaks thru.

I routed the antenna back thru the gromelet (sp) for the 7 day timer in the glove box and back up inside the dash. If if doesn't do the job is will be easy to remove but harder to find an alternative place.

I will fill out the evaluation sheet this afternoon. I will write on the back any suggestions, like tools required. I purchased a 10mm box end. Came in handy to tighten the heater mount to the frame bracket.

The instructions noted a 10mm was needed to remove the starter. A 3/8 or 1/4 ratchet handle will not allow you to get a bite on one of the bolts as the starter housing is in the way!. I used a non ratcheting handle.

Wires to positive and negative and the 7 day timer and remote are not connected. Will do when tank probe is in. Will call Espar on remote wireing, but looks like splicing in is the way they intend but will let them advise.

Bert

Kimzy looks to me like you splice at any point along wire.

Traction bars are great, snowing like hell up here, missed my flight to California. Shucks, have to have one last day on the snowmachine!!

I'll adjust the bars later in the warm weather.

Good heads up on the on-line instructions being more accurate than the one's in the box.

Take notes guys, ESPAR asked for a fair evaluation. !!

I`m with David. Good find on the updated online instructions, Bert. My book is April 98 too.

Did the grommet fit in the drilled hole in the firewall ok?

Did you pull the fuel filter?

This thread will save us many calls to Espar & quesswork #ad

Bill,

The gromlet was a little difficult. Liquid soap and some patience helps. When you drill the hole go slow. I went a little agressive and had to dress around the hole for rough edges. I'm not a young kid anymore so I felt some muscles I hadn't used for a while. #ad

The filter was removed as I have a PrimeLock.

David! Also a big thanks for the time and effort, frustration, etc, for birddoging the Espar product. Have been looking at ads ever since "97" wishing I had one!

Bert

Bill,

You are sooo right! #ad
#ad
. I called Espar. The wiring solution--remove the terminal from the on to the 7 day timer and put it with the remote wire and crimp the new terminal on it. Says they have done it and it works. #ad
#ad

On more thing,I did remove the tire and the fender cowl as this gives a better handle on where the plug in engine is located and you can view to see if it leakes after hose hookup. Also the most important is you can manipulate the frame bracket behind the brake line! NOT TOO BAD just takes time. Our communications should eliminate some time and most of the confusion!!!

"Bert"

With the damn snow I had to deal with this AM and all the frozen ice on the truck, I wish I had installed the heater already!! #ad

Watching this thread real close, great job everybody!! #ad

===From ESPAR===
David,

to keep you up to speed.
1) I have talked with David Boslooper (Detroit Office) all checks have
been sent out to those that he had charged the sales tax too.
2) 7 day timer/ remote instructions - i believe that the one who
initiated the concern has called in and talked to our tech department.
Problem solved - i was right with what i had writen before they are
spliced into the pins 11 & 12 WITH NEW TERMINALS PROVIDED. SEE REMOTE
INSTRUCTIONS FROM OUR WEB SITE UNDER TECH MANUALS.

I did the antenna for the remote by snaking a stiff piece of looped bell wire over the top on the dash cluster. The remote unit itself is ty wrapped over/arounfd the top of the radio area. I just passed the antenna through the loop and pulled it over the top through tward the "A" pillar. Of course I had every piece of unscrewable trim off the dash. ( ashtray, cupholder, glovebox, ... . ). I did the install last fall. Did it over several weekends. It was a way to control my exposure to self induced faults in small steps. I also did not drill the dash. I just used the rubber grommet that is up over on the outboard side of the steering column. It helped that this was also the place I snaked the boost, EGT, painless wiring box, and horton override switch as well as the espar.

This thread is going to save a lot of guess work... Pete & Bert & others. Keep the tips coming.

Bert, How did you fasten the plastic wheel well liner back on? Do you have the special rivet gun that Dodge uses?

Special thanks to David for clearing up the billing errors. #ad
. Good idea putting the cleared up problems in your post too.
