ETC auto vs. ETC manual

Howdy,



I've been in a discussion with someone and they are saying that the ETC is "detuned" when mated to an auto transmission.



Is this true? My understanding was that the motors and computer programming was identical between the ETC auto and ETC manual. And that the difference between the HP and TQ was due to greater efficiency with the manual transmission. Please fill me in. Thanks.

For 2001, the ETC in both the auto and manual transmission have the same max rated HP (235) and TQ (460). The difference between the two engines is how the ECM is programmed. The manual ETC has a different fueling and timing curve that provides more power down low due to the instant load that the clutch puts on the engine. The only other difference between the two setups is that the auto ETC has the smaller HY turbo. The different fueling and timing curves is the reason why you will get some turbo lag when swapping an HX35 in place of an HY35 on a stock engine.



There was a post earlier about a guy who said he successfully swapped in an ECM for a manual transmission in his auto equipped truck. I'm looking for more info on that swap.

2001 is the first year since i think the early first gen truck , that the hp has been the same between the auto and the stick , otherwise there has been about a 40lb/ft and 20 hp difference with the nod going to the stick .



zman , i'd be interested in that also , have you found it yet ?

On the 01 auto trucks, they de-fuel the motor somewhat only when in overdrive to protect their precious auto from damage. There is a warranty-paid-for computer fix to this though that restores power.

Cody - Yes, the '01 autos defuel during shifts. I had the reflash done and it is awsome. The TSB reads that it is only for overdrive, but my truck doesn't defuel at all, now.



I have a buddy that is a parts manager for a local Dodge dealership. I'm gonna check with him to see what kind of prices he can get the ECMs (stock and TM) for. I'll report back...

Zman, I'm glad to hear it works well. One of these days I'll get off my lazy butt and go get it done. If it weren't for the fact that it takes 4 hours to get a . 5 hour reflash done I would already have it!
