When I first noticed the noise at 1000 miles, dealer said it was a normal 24 valve noise #ad
The mechanic is someone I have known for years, so with a grain of salt I accepted the answer. To satisfy my mind even more, he and I drove another HO on the lot and it did it also. I have since test drove two others that didn't. So next week its back to the dealer and see what happens. I also have a connection at a Cummins dealer close by and I'll see what they have to say.

One thing that really hurts is that I went to Vegas recently and brought back a wad of their cash that is sufficient in size for some major bombing, but don't want to start until I get this noise thing fixed #ad

i just drove a friends 2001 etc with auto and noticed a howl , or whine when accelerating ,it was around 1600 1800 rpm , truck was cold , its in the lo 40's , very wierd , has the hy35 turbo and void stickers in place ... . is this similar ???

Mike Brolin,
As you know, mine does have a subtle whine to it. So you can put me down for one. (ETC/DEE)

Last saturday I was at one of the local dealerships when a salesman drove by me in a 2001. 5 ETC/automatic and that thing howled louder than your truck!

I have the ETC w/ AT and have a very annoying howl or whine between 1600 and 2000 RPM when accelerating. I'm starting to suspect that it is exhaust system vibration that is causing the noise. I'm gonna try JNutters?? approach and clamp some pieces of angle iron to the exhaust to see if the noise goes away.

The only whining is coming from me and my transmission #ad

one thing i will note , my 2000 with auto trans did not whine like the '01 i drove yesterday , ever , i called my friend , he disappeared while i was still in a meeting , and told him to pull the snorkel from the airbox to the fender ... when i mentioned something about the howl to him , he thought it was normal and thought nothing of it . this is his first diesel , i talked him out of a ford.

The first thing I did to try to diagnose the howl/whine on my truck was to remove the snorkel. That didn't help the howl/whine, but it did make the turbo noise unbearable with the silencer ring removed. I ended up putting the snorkel back in. This weekend, I may pull it back out and put the silencer ring back in to see how that sounds. I would prefer to have the snorkel out, but also like to be able to hear the turbo spool up. I also plan to try to "tune" the exhaust to try to eliminate the howling noise.
