ETH/DEE Fuel Milage

Just filled up for the 2nd time. So far I am very pleased with the milage.

1st tank=17. 67 MPG
2nd tank=18. 54 MPG

This is mixed driving mostly in town with no towing. I will be driving to Albuquerque, NM this week and will be able to get some good highway milage numbers. This is much better than the 99 auto I had which could average anywhere from 14 to 18 mpg. What is everyone else getting?

My weekly driving is about 75% highway, and 25% stop & go, and I am getting about 22. 5 mpg. On steady freeway driving at 65, I get 25. #ad

Gotta love that Cummins - Huge torque and mileage too #ad
I get 16mpg in 100% stop and go town driving and 20mpg at 70mph or so on the freeway.

My first tank came out to 18 mpg in city driving, but I have yet to beat that in any kind of driving and I'm up to 13k miles now.

When I put my Lance 1130 camper on and made a round trip to Canada, the best I could do was about 14 in the flatlands and 12 in the mtns. Of course I have trouble keeping it below 65 but did notice the mileage starts to get visibly better at 55-60.

My '99 3500 automatic actually seemed to get slightly better mileage, but I would'nt trade my 6-speed for anything.

I average around 17 mpg with mostly Hwy miles It seems to work out to be . 5 better than the overhead truk computer says. .

It does seem to improve as the Cummins gets broke in. . 19,500 miles and climbing

Does anyone with a stock low mileage truck get better???

I've read here on TDR that most of the Mild BOMBing Increases mileage..... SAVE OUR NATURAL RESOURCES... ...

Seat of the pants (watching the rate my fuel gauge drops) looks like a little BOMBing the right way does help mileage. Well, decided to calculate my last few tanks (write it on a log then type it into Excel to automatically compute it):

Date MPG
8/24 18. 18 100% city
8/27 20. 92 60/40% hiway/city
8/28 20. 45 100% hiway but getting on it often!
8/31 20. 68 75/25% hiway/city
9/04 19. 75 75/25% hiway/city, last 25% new injectors (trompin on it!!!)
9/10 17. 98 25%hway 50%city, last 25% towing 5. 5K @70
9/15 18. 91 35%hiway towing 1800lb, 65% city empty (added boost module)

This current tank is the first unloaded with injectors and boost module. Am interested to see where MPG will be at. Driving easy on this one, took 145 miles to drop first 1/8th tank. Really loving MPGs, but gotta get good mileage to offset the $1. 82 and up fuel around here #ad

I know you just took an extended trip. Is that where you saw the 25 MPG? I have a buddy who has a 99 4X4 5 speed with the 3. 54 gears and I took 2-3 trips with him last year and observed around 24 with my own eyes. He has more miles now, I think 45-50K and he reported the other day that he was seeing 26 to 27, but that was driving real easy down the Oregon coast.

E-Brake goes on @ delivery time, Bed comes off and will be replaced by a custom aluminum work body / flat bed. Ordered on 03-28-00. Re-ordered on 08-08-00 (at least I got a VON already the second time)

First 5000 miles: 16. 71 mpg
Second 5000 miles: 17. 79 mpg
Third 5000 miles: 19. 23 mpg
Overall average: 17. 89 mpg for 15473 miles

Before anyone jumps to the conclusion that mileage is increasing dramatically just due to break-in, you need to know that the first and second 5k miles included a lot more travel at 75 mph with boats on the roof. The third 5k has more miles at 70 mph and slower speeds, and fewer miles with boats on the roof.
But hey, who's counting? #ad

I think I read that Evan had a 12V. And I believe those trucks to get better fuel mileage. I'm jealous, I wouldn't mind having a 12V. Mine maxes out at 20. 85 mpg, unloaded, at 70 mph on relatively flat ground 95% interstate driving using the c. c.

Evan's truck is a '01 ETH, 2wd QC shortbed. His last one, a 98 24v reg cab 2wd auto got around 20 city, 25 hiway, up to 27 when he drove easy (65 or so).

No undervalved Ram here... LOL, but I do drive one or two a day usually...

Anyways, Shelby, I saw the 25 MPG on my trip several times, mainly when I cruise for a while at 65-70. That is my best speed for mileage. In my 98. 5 it was the same, but I got 27 in the 65-70 range. Not bad! #ad


Right now, my commute to and from work is ab0out 650 miles/week. With the weekends, my driving is about 75% highway, and 25% city stop & go. I see about 22-23 with that combination of 75/25. Gotta love that Cummins!

My truck is bone stock with almost 15K miles and I average around 22 mpg which is about 75% highway and 25% city driving. On the highway portion I usually run between 62 and 65 mph. I do not run the AC when I drive by myself. On the few pure highway trips I have made my mileage actually drops a little however I run the AC to cool the passengers off. The mpg has never gone below 20 since the first tank and it appears to be gradually creeping up as the truck breaks in.

Just returned from 3K trip towing 14K of dead weight on a trailer. I averaged 16. 5 for the entire trip with 3500 4:10 6 speed. It was an improvement over the 14. 3-14. 4 I got the last time. I went from the hills to the mountains, to the flat lands never was forced to down shift thanks to little tuning from Cummins. The best bucks I've spent for the mileage was the RVs tuned for economy. Best overall was the exhaust brake.
