What do you guys think? My buddy has a '01 ETH/DEE with 34k on the clock. All of the sudden it started spittin' and shakin' @ 1300rpm. It keeps doing it 'till about 25-26rpm... then it smoothes out totally. It does it both when you're sittin' still in neutral or driving down the road. Took it into the dealer... they guessed bad lift pump. Replaced it... . no change... . still exactly the same. Any ideas? It feels like it's not getting enough fuel. The whole engine starts shaking pretty good... . not real, real bad, but definitely enough that anyone can feel it. When under load... it cuts-out pretty bad. Following behind him you can hear it in the exhaust real easy. That's about my best description... . any thoughts appreciated.

Did they run the DRB Scan on it to see if any sensors had set faults? If they didn't, that's the first thing I would do. Second is to get the dealer to cut a PO to take it to a Bosch shop that can check out the VP44 and injectors. Almost sounds like an injector is stuck and is dripping fuel into the cylinder. That would produce a grey smoke at idle and make it miss at idle. I'm thinking the pump has a problem.

Thanks Alan. I was'nt there when they checked it out so I don't know what all they did. But like you, I was thinking some sort of injector problem too. I did not see any unusual smoke. Obviously, he's bringing it back. Was hoping to throw a few ideas at them to check out. Thanks again for heads-up.

I talked to the tech, he said they did the scan tool and did not find any fault codes. He's thinking VP 44 or possibly bad injector. Any other thoughts?

Usually surging/missing is a symptom of either a bad lift pump or injector pump. Both should be under warranty. Injectors will cause missing but you will usually get grey smoke when they are the problem because of the the fuel delivery to the cylinder. They should just send you to a qualified shop. I've done it here and the dealer simply gave the shop a PO number and the work was done. Good luck.
