Well, I'm standing on the edge of a small blast crater from my first "B. O. M. B. 'n".
Had the Resonator and muffler removed from my 3947 mile-old 2001. 5 2500 ETH. In place of Mopar's Pipe puzzle went a length of straight 3" pipe and the Walker 21468.

Reactions:

1. Idle - In cab it goes relatively unnoticed, save for the exhaust pulse sounds faster. Outside, marginally louder until you walk out back, then it takes on a frantic sound, not a thumping of timing but more like a jet that wants more throttle?

2. Cruising Hwy (inside) 2,200 Resonation is gone! Really Sounds a tad quiter, more turbo whistle, less "VRRRRRRR" (windows up). Resonation reappears arround 2,600rpm.

3. Traffic, SURE TOOK THE FUN OUT OF WINDOWS DOWN. The Whistle from the wastegate when upshifting approaches annoyance; "WHOOOSH!"

4. FAT ON THE LOUD PEDAL, Yep, it makes more noise than stock on the steel, But, THE SPOOL UP IS QUICKER AND THE BOOST COMES UP A LOT QUICKER, even reaches peak at a lower RPM give comparable loads and speeds.

Verdict?

Undecided.

I installed a Jardine 4 inch system on my young 3200 mile ETH last weekend. Not as noticable of a difference in sound as I thought there would be. (Which is good) There is a bit of a roar at freeway speeds (and RPM's) but it doesn't seem that loud or irritating. It does seem to spool up a tad quicker, particularly at higher RPM's. There is definently less back pressure with a wide open 4 inch system all the way. #ad

Straight pipe from turbo to bumper. Louder, but not as loud as I expected. Spools up faster, runs cooler, cools down faster. There is a resonating sound right at 2000 rpm when wide open. I will keep it like it is. I like it.

I can't remember what the part ##s are but I used the Walker staight thru 4" on my stock system. Removed the muffler and resonator added some more 3" pipe and welded it up. Then added a 13" long X 5" chrome tip. Realy changed the tone, but not to load in the cab. EGTs are much better.

Howdy all,

Was thinking of removing my resonator and muffler, replacing it with a 3" straight piece. Would that void my warranty? I'm completely stock. Would like to add a Jacobs E-brake maybe, but not needed. I don't haul or tow anything, thought it would be nice to have. Especially helping it warm up in the winter. Thanks.

Bill,

The only thing that I can see happening is the warranty on the exhaust system might be voided.

I've been considering removing the muffler and resonator on my truck. I like the big-rig sound that I hear on some of the other rams that I have seen, but worry that the noise may be a little too much after a month or two. Anybody got any thoughts on this?

My stock muffler and resenator gave way to a dynomax stainless unit that is about the same size as the old res. . I like the sound of the truck but it did make it a bit louder in the cab when towing or under load. The turbo whistle is definatly louder inside and out but like I said it doesn't bother me, heck, I even turn the radio down sometimes so I can hear the purr better. My main reason for this mod was to lower exhaust temps and it acomplished that perfectly. The big rig sound is an added bonus for me.

Thanks Mike.

I only have 32,000 on the truck, and hate to think of voiding my warranty. I am, like you, after the "big rig" sound, and also lowering the egt's. Just not sure as of yet.
Thanks again.

Bill

I would like to remove the muffler and that is all. Does anyone know what kind of sound you would get. Don't need a lot of noise, just a good sound.

I have a 4" BD exhaust system and love it. I installed the new down pipe and the long piece to that connects to the muffler, but left the muffler off for a couple of days to see how I liked it. My truck sounded like an Army duece and a quarter (lots of whistle). I went ahead and installed the muffler and rest of the system. Sound really good, especially at 1900 RPM, where it's at resonant frequency.

I get lots of compliments and thumbs up. Even catch power choke drivers looking over. #ad
