Once in a while I get it. I could swear it was cut with gasoline. It must have something to do with the way that batch was refined?

If it smells like gas, it's not good. You should probably stop pumping and complain to station manager. It's hard to detect (smell) a small amount of gas in diesel fuel, so if you're able to smell it while you're pumping, it's got to have a lot in it.

And yes. . I have pumped diesel that smells like gas.

Interesting . . depends on what the tank truck had in it before diesel ... . the only sure fire way that I know of is to test the flash point of the fuel ... years ago when I was a Chief Engineer on a river towboat ... we tested the flashpiont as a rule ... because of gettin fueled from truck that had gas in them before diesel ...

If you have the $$ to get the tester ... accept no fuel with a flashpoint below 140F

Sorry about posting in the wrong forum, Doc

I don't think there is actual gasoline in the fuel, but it sure smells like it. I bought it at a Truck Stop tonight. Cashier said hundreds of trucks have filled and no complaints.

If your diesel has gas in it and you put a match to it it will catch fire. Straight diesel will put the match out. Don't do this while you are standing next to the pump.

Gasoline will put a match out as well ... depends on the temp of the fluid ... you can even put a match out in naptha if its cold enough ... same goes for lots of other things ... once a substance gets to its flashpoint ... it will burn

My buddy use to haul gas. I helped him do an oil an lube on the big truck. When I went to fill the fuel filter with fuel it smelled just like gas. He kind of laughs at me. I go it don't smell like diesel. He said it was pure #1 grade diesel and smells quite like gas.

The diesel fuel that we use at UPS smells like gasoline. It also carries a different plackard # on the tanker truck. I asked the fuel delivery driver about it and he said that it was a different blend than standard diesel. That is why our trucks at UPS go so fast:D;) . Chris

Go - no go

The flash go - no go on diesel is 119' . It takes as little as one barrel per 1000 to contaminate a batch of diesel. This is 42 gallons to 42000 gallons! Not much. If it smells of gas, don't run it and report it to the station manager. Chances are the last delivery was mixed! This happens more often than you think. All it takes is putting the wrong hose in the wrong tank. Pull a sample and take it to your local fuel distribution terminal. They will have you fill a change of custody form and run a flash on it.

Don't do this while you are standing next to the pump.

Texas Diesel ask why?

You may get some on your shoes and ruin the carpet. hehehe:D

Don't do it next to the pump?

Won't smell like gas or diesel, but will smell and will wash of shoes and carpet. Will cause snow to turn yellow!!!!!!!

I've only had it happen once, at a small filling station in town. The truck driver put the fuel hose into the diesel tank and opened the valve. I was filling up at the time when I noticed the placard on the tanker said 1203 (or something to that effect) instead of 1993, and he had the hose running to the diesel tank. Stuff happens. We got him to stop, but the fuel in the tank had to be recovered and replaced. Anything can happen. Just be careful.

1203

The placarding for all gas and diesel can be 1203, unless it is a dedicated trailer (hauling only diesel). The placarding on most tankers hauling all products will be the most flamable contents which in most cases will be gasoline-1203.

To the untrained nose I suppose #1 could smell a little like gas. To me it smells like kerosene, which it is. I would not trust the nose. Had a super one time opening old barrels that had lost all markings over the years. He would have me open them and he would take a sniff! I opened an old barrel of additive, he took a whiff and went over onto his back. He came around, but didn't do that again. Turned out to be an old barrel of flow improver, that had weathered down to pure nasty... .

DISHONEST VENDORS

I can't remember the details, but back when i drove a transport a station owner told me about dishonest vendors that buy the product that is in the pipeline between different terminal orders. The product is used as a flush between orders, and can contain a mix of more than one product. They then sell it at various stations (usually cheaper). My advise would be to stay away from the station, and buy somewhere else.

The more I think about it, I think it smells like jet fuel. Of course when I start thinking ,I get dangerous. I just wish it made the truck as fast as a jet. !!! Actually the mileage is down with the stinky stuff.

Champane Flight, thanks for the heads up! I didn't know that diesel could be hauled in a gasoline tanker. It was gas in the truck at the time, but I suppose I would have looked stupid had it been diesel . Learn something new every day. Cool.
