Take it for what it's worth but the Allison X-1100-3B transmission in an M1 tank (1500 HP engine) uses good old 15w-40 motor oil.

Four forward and 2 reverse gears, propels all 72 tons quite well I might add!!

I always wondered if things like ATF, power steering fluid, and other auxiliary system lubricants weren't just some cheesy formulation of what's left over from the refining process and passed on to us as something we have to use.

I have a Sea-Doo jet boat that calls for this special oil in the jet pumps. This crap looks, feels, and smells like ATF yet costs like $12 for 4 ounces. What a scam.

Don't kid yourself! ATF is a very complexed lubricant, and is more complex than any engine oil is. The current DEXRON III H ATF has a higher quality performance level then the previous DEXRON III G. Group 1 base oils will not pass the testing requirements for wear, oxidation, cyclying tests or the duration they must be tested at.

There were new tests associated with the DEXRON III H that were not required for the DEXRON III G, such as the Aeration Rig test.

The Viickers vane pump wear test weight loss was reduced to 10mg from 15mg. THe smaller the weight lost, the better the oil did its job.

THe plate clutch friction test was extended from 100 hours to 150 hours.

The cycling test was increased from 20,000 cycles to 32,000 cycles.

The THOT Osidation test was increased from 300 hours to 450 hours.

Now with the introduction of the GM 6-speed transmission, there will be a DEXRON VI requirement. FORD wants a MERCON "1" ATF in their new 6 speed automatics.

Both GM and FORD want these fluids to be Backwards compatible with the other fluid requirements. Few companies have the ability to produce these fluids due to the cpmplexity of them! Even AMSOIL does not have a fluid that will meet the new requirements for the MERCON "1" and GM DEXRON VI, and they are usully ahead of the game.

They do meet have fluids that meet the requirements of DEXRON III H and MERCON SP.

If this transmission requires Allison C-3 or C-4 then the 15W-40 Motor oil would fullfil this requirement.
