Took the truck in this morning to have the power steering system looked at as well as the navigation. The PS has been whining and the navigation system does not read the disk. They replace the nav disk under warranty no issues there. The power steering they tell me I need to change the fluid about every 30K. I've never heard this but they want $116. 00 for it and he claims it will fix the whining the pump makes when going around turns.

Anyone else ever hear that?

I have an 04, 04. 5 and 05 with 245K miles on the 04 and we've never had the fluid changed in any of the trucks..... we have no whine.....

I'd suggest that you pull the return hose and drain it, and cycle a quart or two through the system and let it go into the bucket as well than refill... .

Once you've done this and the whine is still there, take it back to them and let them fix it..... mentioning that you've had the fluid changed... .

If when you get done you don't have the whine... . let us know... .

I'm with Jim. 75k, never changed the PS fluid. Some people around here do change it out, however (steved comes to mind), and it's certainly not a bad idea.

However, as far as I know it's not in the maintenance schedule. If your dealer thinks it's part of the routine maintenance, ask him to locate it for you in the owners manual. If it ain't there, then run (don't walk) to another dealer.

It's just another case of the service writer pushing unneeded services to increase his commission. They'll sell you the service, then tell you the pump still needs to be replaced.

My wife's PT started whining out of the blue after about 4 years and 30,000 miles. It was not low so I pulled the return and drained it, refilled it with ATF+4, drained it again and when refilled the noise was gone. Can't explain it, and the fluid coming out looked fine. Has not made a sound since.

Sure tell them to do it. Just make it conditional that if it doesn't fix it your not paying for it. Ill bet they will give you a whole line of crap. If thats the case I would walk away. That will tell you how confident they are about the fix.
