Gentleman,

I installed a triple pod A-Pillar two months ago after Thunder in Muncie and was just getting use to the Autometer Ultralite EGT gauge going to a neutral position of 250 degrees when truck is not running.

Problem now happened when I shut it down this morning at work. I let her cool down to 300-325 like normal, and when I shut motor off, the needle pegged downward. I mean counter clockwise all the way back around to the 4 o'clock position - just short of reading max temperature. This rapid movement caught my eye, so cycled key - back to 325. Cycled off - back to 4 o'clock position, it moves so fast that I swear the needle bounces when it gets there.

Any Ideas? Gauge appear to still be functioning.

The Westach is a direct-read pyrometer as well. It always shows t'couple tip temperature, regardless of whether or not the key is on.

Mine isn't an ultralite, but a Z series, but whenever I turn the truck off the needle swings down to the 6 O'Clock position. It was like that in the box when I first got it and I remember thinking that it looked odd, but it always goes right back there when it's off so I guess it's normal.

My Ultra lite pro comp EGT gauge is at 0 when the truck is off. It reads the temp when I turn the truck on. I just checked and it is reading around 100 degrees about 1 hour after shut down.

I hope I explain this right, but mine does two different things when I turn mine off. If I turn the key back to the lock position really fast it points to about 200. But if I just turn the key to the kill position(one back from run) it points straight down. It all depends on how I turn it off. Most autometer electrical gauges do this when you take the curent away

I don't know how the Ultralite hooks up, I have the comp series and it has a module for egt gauge. If you wire the 12v feed for the module to igni. it will bounce the gauge when the key is turned off. I had this problem and hooked up the 12v feed to constant voltage and it's OK. Your egt will read all the time with key off (I believe) but it don't drain batteries.

I must be lucky. My Autometer gauge reads the temperature when the key is turned on then returns to 0, I repeat zero when the key is turned off.

well, only 1600* in about 3 seconds and 1800* in about 5... that's all:eek: :D i'm sure i could go futher if my foot would stay planted on pedal... but it starts to shake around 1700*

And the last one. These are all by shutting the engine down different ways as I described above. Notice this one shut down on zero. Autometer tachs do funny things when you take the electrical source away from them also. I just figure it is normal for there design. :D

Gents, it depends on where you got your power for the gauge. When mine (ultra lite) started getting jumpy, it was the ground. If I switch the key on or off VERY quickly it will jump and return to normal-- like it's a static electric jump or something.

I wired my gauge to a constant hot (i think) and it reads EGT whether the key is on or not. I read somewhere that the thermocouple has VERy little current draw, so I doubt it will kill the battery. My truck sat for a week and didn't show a single sign of battery drain.

I dunno if I DID in fact wire it to constant hot, but the gauge acts like it-- the needle doesn't move when it shuts down.

The spike of needle movement is hard on the mechanism of the gauge.

Autometer Tech Reply

Gentleman,

After starting this thread thought I would perform a contact us on Autometer website. Based on the response given this is normal operation for gauge, and I am not to worry about it. Read the following.

Hello.

There is no need to worry about battery drain since the power is shut

off to the gauge. The gauge has an air core meter design which allows the

gauge needle to go where it wants when power shuts off. The reason for the

air core design is for response time and accuracy when the gauge is on.

Thank you Cory Tech/Service

Now that I am selling my 01 Ram, listed in Classifieds, What Gauge should I run in my new 04 when it comes in? What gauges match factory appearance best?

Don

I sold my 01 also. I went with the white face Dipricol gauges this time. They match the new white face gauges perfect in the 03-04 trucks. I will take a picture of them lit up tonight for you to see.
