Do you have turn outs, straight or angle cut? Each one will sound different. What kind of assembly do u have- hole in bed, with a Y or T pipe out to the pipes or a 5 or 6 inch steel pipe in the bed with the stacks on top of it? I have a 6" steel square pipe in the bed with two 5" turnout stacks welded to it. At a high rpm say in 1st or 2nd gear I think I get the drone or resonating woooooooooo pitch sound, but not at highway speeds, it doesnt bother me.

You could go to a bigger stack, how bout a 8" stove pipe? Bet that would rumble enough for ya, dont laugh if I can get my hands on a 8" stack, I'm gonna try it. Hahaha Bill

How big is your exhaust before the stacks? Open it up to a 4" as soon as possible for best results. ALso, bump your timing a hair. more than that, and you get the rattle so prevelant in lesser engines. Turbine housings, air filter box set up, turbo itself, will all have an effect on the sound.

I have a 4 inch exhaust with a muffler that exits at the stock location... I really can barely hear it (above the engine) but at work I have been accused of having a hot rod truck with no muffler. :D

Guess I have to get someone to drive it by a few times so I can check it out.

My 90 is of corse a regular cab I have a 4 inch stack in the bed right behind the rear window. It has plenty of romble I thought. I aways open the slider and crack the right window so I can onjoy the sound of power. I love to hear that loud whistle at every shift. No muffler just some flex and 90's and a 3 to 4 inch adapter at the bed.

looking to get more of a rumble from my pipes rather than just a drone

Isn't that like buying a pizza w/out cheese and meat??... ... ... I have a heck of a drone with my open exhaust terminating front of the rear tire.

Does it mid range of the rpm band.

Guess I have to get someone to drive it by a few times so I can check it out.

I'm just a phone call away Oo. Oo. Oo.

rumble

Years ago the guys who wanted lots of noise from their six cylinder Chevys would split the exhaust so that the exhaust was two cylinders and four cylinders going to the back and boy did they rumble. I expect you could get the same result with the Cummins. The six is inherently smooth and gives a balanced sound if all the exhaust is in one pipe. Be some trouble. Don't really know if it would work.

Only problem with that, James, is driving the turbo. But, if one wanted to split it ASAP after the downpipe (easier to do sooner on 2wd than 4x4), it might make a differnece. At the very least, it would flow better.

I think the turbo it self is part of the problem in getting a good sounding exhaust. In some states a turbo is considered a sound muffling device and meets the requirements as a muffler.

Engine configuration dictates ex. sound more than anything, Inline sixes drone @ high rpm, I wish my truck sounded more like an 855 @ highway speeds, which is a six also, just spinning a lot slower, My Detroit powered Dodge @ full tilt has a wail that can be heard for blocks but it's still a drone, alot of comp. will give you more "crack" in your ex. tone but it turns into a drone @ high rpm. I think ctd's have a great mechanical presence. Here is a test you can do, take a large metal can, fill it 1/4 way with screws, bolts, nuts, and silverware, shake it vigorously, sounds like psd, How'd ya like to work w/that?!

Hey, I don't know about any one else, but I love the sound of my truck with the stock exhaust minus the muffler, I hope It won't change the sound much when I put my 3 1/2 set up on :D :D :D

Proto

Proto,

It will get a deeper tone and more of a roar on take off, esp if your stock pipe has the crush over the axle. Nothing negative, IMO.

DP

I know a guy who is about (maybe) to market a resonating chamber that lowers the tone to more of that of a 8. 3, with the volume between a straightpipe and a straight through muffler.

PM me if you want info.

I have a Dynoflex resonator with my 5" exhaust. It had the same effect on the sound as what you are talking about CB.

Gibson- If your engine was turning about 15-1800 RPMs cruising, it would sound the best. RPMs affect the sound quaility. If you have 4. 10 gears and no overdrive, it is having to run pretty fast down the highway.

The Mack I drive has a 5" stack on it, and it sounds the best (deepest) at around 1450-1600 RPMs.

For what size pipe and how much will it be? I need to do something with mine... . Can't hear myself think at 70 mph. Not that it bothers me ;) ... ... it's just that it would be nice to talk instead of yell to the person in the back seat. :D

BMoeller, I totally agree, I don't have a tach and currently don't even have third member(see toothless 3. 07 earlier post) but with my 3. 07's,235/85/16,727 combo @70 it's revving past the rumble stage, I have heard alot of new Macks at the quarry I frequent mostly the E-7-427's and they have a different ex. tone at low R's almost like they have variable inlet guide vanes on the turbo, is this what you steer and if so what's up?
