I recently did a drive from az to utah back to az. Now i only had 26500 miles on my truck so i decided to be hard on it going up those mountains with an empty 16 foot flat bed trailer there and half loaded trailer on the way back with boxes and a quad in the bed of the truck. I was moving. Now when i was going up mountains i let off at first and then nailed it and my exaust got up to 1500 degrees or so. it stayed there for about 45 sec to a minute cause i assume the truck must be safety rated. So i let go and it finally shifted into fourth. What i'm asking is when do i need to consider letting off if ever. The only mod i have done is straight piped the exaust. Two, why was i not blowing out much black smoke. Thats like my favorite part of hauling *** is to watch all my black smoke come out. Hardly saw any this trip. All in all i think i broke my motor in a little bit on this trip.

Not to mention i got a continueous 11 mpg flooring it almost up every mouintain and passing people on a two lane black top. I would say thats pretty good for the way i was driving it.

Since your not moded up yet for fuel, you are being protected by the truck. Once you mod your fueling for more power, you can count of doing damage. Traditional rule is keep it under 1,200*F and your first mod should be boost and EGT gages. I emagine if you melt down a pistion under warranty with no mods, you will probable get a new engine the first time, probably not the 2nd time though. One other thing, when you are pulling a long hill, your oil temp can get over 245*F. I run synthetic because of this, keeps the oil from coaking in the turbo bearings. ;)

I guess i should have added that i do have the gauges. Exaust, boost, and transmission. Don't really care if the transmission goes. I wouldn't mind putting an ats one in it anyway. After the warranty is up of course.

The 3rd gen trucks run quite a bit hotter than the previous trucks. Some of this is due to the injection events, which are designed to make heat to light off the catalytic. The pistons have been changed, and the oil cooling improved, to allow the motor to take significantly more egt without damage. 1550* continuous for 30 minutes are numbers I have heard for the "600/610" motors. 1450* for the other common rail motors.

Obviously you have an egt gauge because you know the temps. Obviously 1500 degrees is safe for the engine because your stock engine did just that. I have also been told that my stock truck is running to high of egts. I have seen 1050 post turbo, which is high but not as high as yours. Both however are above 1200 on stock trucks. The new ones run hotter period. Adding a fueling box and keeping yourself under 1200 is silly isn't it? I'd be careful once I got close to 1400 though as you now know you are coming up on the stock limit.

If you are running a six speed I think I would have downshifted and run a little higher rpm and lower egt. My automatic pulling a full load won't get past 1000 post turbo. You might have been a little on the hot side but 1200 just isn't realistic on the new trucks.

If the 3rd Gens run hotter, then that is a good thing I guess. I have seen 1,600 for a few seconds and backed out of it. 1550* for 30 minutes is a long, long, long time. I would want to see that in a written form on official Cummins or Dodge stationary (service manual) before I would buy off on that. Then I would feel OK. ;)

just wanted to see what your guys opinions were on getting that hot. It sure was fun to fly up that hill passing a hemi and a duramax. I think the duramax got a little mad that he was just passed by a dodge pulling a trailer. He tried to catch back up with me but i guess he didn't want to haul 80 with me. It was great. Thanks guys.
