While changing my lift pump out this past Monday I noticed that I have more than a ideal amount of oil dripping out of my blow by tube. Then my mother asks me about the several black spots in the gravel driveway today so I'm begining to wonder if something is wrong with my truck. The past couple of oil changes I've noticed my truck is using quite a bit of oil between changes. Also the front of my engine around the oil filler tube and below are really messy is there a gasket between the tube and timing case?

Also my stablizer shock gets oil covered very quickly if I hose it off so where should I look for leaks? Timing case? ???

The truck has 190K on it, what do you guys think the problem could be? I did a search and didn't come up with a whole lot.

Hard to say without seeing it, Mark, but it sounds like more than one problem. The crank vent tube can drip because of excessive blowby or just because of oil mist condensing in the tube and dripping out. The front stuff can be a crank seal, a timing cover, or even just forgetting to put the cap back on for a trip or two. There is a seal on the oil fill tube where it screws into the timing cover, it seals and screws in just like the oil fill cap does, and it comes with a sealing material on the cover too.

Anyway, can you get the oil all cleaned off? If you do it'll make finding the exact place where oil comes out a lot easier.

One thing about oil - a little goes a long way when it's where you don't want it to be.

just a guess, you' ve got a head gasket in its way out(very likely),or the motor is getting tired(not likely if its been maintained and warmed up before driven hard).

You might have more than 1 oil leak. When the crank seal starts leaking, the fan will splatter oil everywhere. If the leak is bad enough, you will see a drip from under the damper after a good run. Been my experience that when the stabilizer is oil coated, crank seal is gone.

Mine is the same way, seems to use about a quart in a 5000 mile oil change interval. Underside of engine and front axle usually have a decent coating, with a good deal of it SEEMING to come from the blowby tube. I just haven't had a chance to steam clean it and keep a good eye on it to see where the leak is stemming from.

Got Smoke, I had a terrible oil leak and went searching. First, all my pan bolts were loose. 2) All my gear case bolts were loose and 3) My oil fill tube was loose. I tightened all bolts to spec and I no longer have engine oil leaks.

Hope you find it.

I have the same exact leak, front behind fan all caked on oil, I'll clean it off then it comes right back, but no puddle. Sprays all over steering shocks and tie rods.

I use way more than that. :{

I am going to try and get it sprayed off here soon. My main concerne is the excessive oil out of the blow by tube. :(

I have seen about 10 4B/3. 9's that have been dusted and do the same thing CUMMINS has a tool that tests the amount of blow by to tell approx wear on the engine (but the head gasket could be the culprit)

Mine seems to have been blowing alot of oil out the tube here lately also.

Since my transmission overheated on me ,I've been seeing alot of oil around back of the engine around the bottom of the bell housing area. Is it possible that that when I overheated the transmission that it could make the rear main seal start leaking? Man. . I hope it's not a head gasket :(

Can you do this to the oil pan bolts??

I have a question about this..... my oil pan bolts look like they leak a bit and I was wondering is it safe to retorque them down to see if that will clear up the leak?? Won't that crush the gasket and cause more leaking?? That was the experience I have had before on that issue.

Also, is there a way to replace the oil pan gasket without pulling the engine out of the truck since the crossmember is welded in to the frame??

Well I know this has been said a million times, but check the vaccum pump. That thing seems the seep 24 hours a day. Between the PS pump. A real PIA to stop.
