My 03 has started smoking black smoke. I disconnected the Edge EZ and everything else is running stock. It has 165K on the clock and still runs great and the mileage seems to be still around 19 mpg. It is not huge black clouds of smoke but enough to bother me when idling at a drive through window or a red light. I have checked oil and water and both were normal. The air filter was recently changes as was the fuel filter. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

i would guess a fuel problem with it doing it at idle. Do you hear any ticking noise? if yes injector may be the problem. if it is bluish black could be burning oil. i know that you said normal oil level but you could loose a quart and still be in normal range. do you have gauges? egt runing high or normal? if it only smokes while driving could be a air problem maybe a boost leak or a bad turbo. check the play in the wheel any play is bad there is almost no tolerance for play. good luck and you always pay when you play with her. (trucks or women)

Cody, I don't have a EGT Guage but don't do much pulling with her. No strange noises. I don't think the Edge EZ has hurt it. Still set on 3 and I am not much of a hot rodder. I am wondering if maybe I have some bad or dirty injectors?

it is hard to tell without hearing or looking at the truck. does it smoke at idle all the time? you can pull the valve cover off and manually disconect each one to test each injector to see if it smokes without one running or not. the best way is to have a shop with a scan tool shut each injector down one at a time and see if smoke goes away. at 165k you probablly have some injectors ready to fail but not always. are you blowing any oil out the crankshaft vent tube? do you have fuel in oil (you can smell it or put a piece of paper towle down and do a drip test watch for rings to form were fuel evaporates and oil stays).

have someone do an injector cut-out test with a scan tool capable of this test, without a very low micron fuel filter that edge box on level 3 is set to do damage to the injector tips with the added pressure on them. look into a lower micron fuel filter, good luck.

Hotram03,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry I am so long in responding. I have been out of town and away from the computer. You are probably right about the fuel injectors. I will get them checked out. I have the box unplugged right now and it does smoke less but still more than I like. I get my filters through Genos along with the oil filters. I get the finer mesh oil filters but did not know about fuel filters. I run 15/40 Amsoil in it with a filter change at 5K and full oil change at 10K. Never have to add oil between changes but I am going to do the fuel in the oil check as Cody suggested.

Thanks for the advise!

Cody,

Thanks for the responses. Sorry for the long pause. I have been out of town and away from the computer.

I'll get the truck in the shop soon and have the injectors checked. It does smoke all the time when idleing. It does seem to stumble just a little bit now and then and puff a little more smoke for a second when it does it. I have ran a few bottles of injector cleaner through it since I first posted and I really don't think it has helped. I guess with 165K care free miles something is due to wear out. I'll get her fixed and hopefully run it another 165!

Thanks again for the responses.
