My truck has 230,000 miles on it. It pulls once in a while(mostly during hay season) but when it does it's pretty heavy. It used to smoke only under heavy exceleration while pulling. Now when I crank it up in yhe mornings it smokes white for about 2 minutes. When I accelerate normaly it puts out a small puff but when I get in to it she really lets a cloud out, even sometimes into 2nd gear. Does any one know what the problem is? It really does not bother me just hopeing to keep this engine in this truck for another 200K miles!

First guess...

My first guess would be a plugged up air filter. Is your exhaust "fixed"? Might be that the cat has too much guts and is clogging up the works.

well I shot some cleaner through the air filter about two weeks ago. the exhause is 4" & within a year old muffler, no cat

You say you shot some cleaner though your filter?

What type of cleaner and what type of filter?

It sounds like an air problem from a bad filter.

I have a K&N air filter. Cleaned it with the K&N cleaner kit. I have heard that these may let too much dirt through, I do not know though

I know this may sound like a dumb question but did you follow the intructions from K+n on the cleaning?

There has been a lot of coterversy on the K+n and I for one feel alot but not all of it is pilot error. I have run one on the last three trucks of my own with over 380k with no prob at all. :D

Maybe try puling you snorkell and see if you have a mouse nest or a pile of dog food in the fender.

when is the last time your valves were set?

how about timming? fuel fliter? cleaned the prefilter screen(in the bottom of the heater)?

i think even an over oiled K&N would air better than a stock filter. i doubt that is the problem.

keep checking you'll get it fixed up :D

Obviously you are getting enough fuel, so air must be lacking. Do you have a filter minder on it? Run it with no filter, not much just enough to see the effect.

What about boost leaks?

Mike

How do you check for boost leaks besides just running your hands around? I will pull the filter out today and see what it does!

GJ, Look for the obvious first, clamps and such. A boost gauge will tell you if it severe. Also do a search on testing the turbo to intake hoses, a member has a way of pressure testing the system.

Mike

there is an air conditioning line on the passenger side just out of the turbo that has been known to rub through that boot.

just tigthen all your clamps. some times you can hear a squealing or funny noise out of a boost leak too.

maybe something Rock/Gravel has rubbed a hole in your intercooler. check it out real close down between it and the radiator.

do you have a boost guage? you can use an oil pressure guage as one for testing.

Sorry it took so long to get back. I am blessed with one of those jobs that think that you love to be gone from the house for 3 or 4 days without much notice. Anyway I took the air filter out and ran it for 3-4 miles with different excelleration. I also checked all around for boost leakes, found none. It still smokes the same. The black smoke really does not bother me besides the fact that it has started up within a weeks time. The gray smoke that comes out for 2-3 minutes first thing in the morning is what kinda concerns me. I have a boost gauge if this is any help: at 30 mph and 1500 rpm it is at about 10#, at 55 mph in 5th gear loaded going up grade at 2100 rpm it goes to about 40#. Do any of yall have any ideas?

Does it use exessive oil? If not then it sounds like timming to me I would check it or get some one to. Thier known for slipping.

An over oiled K&N can cause black smoke, read restriction. Does the restriction gauge still work? Does it read more than 25in of vacuum.

Remind me of the year model, 5spd or auto etc. 40 psi sounds kinda high for the oe turbo, you are testing its design limits, 34 psi max is a safer setting. Adjust the wastegate or the boost orfice elbow, if you are running a camplate etc. .

You might ck. the clearances / side play (radial clearances) of the compressor side of the turbo the spec. is (. 012-. 018")

The end play is . 004-. 006" before serial no 840638 and

. 001-. 003" after 840638. If you are having some oil consumption, the lube oil lubing the turbo maybe entering the intake (clean air) and causing en-richment ie the black smoke.

From your white smoke complaint in the am, I'm thinking overflow valve (low fuel psi).

How much oil does your truck use every 1000 mi. , 3000 mi. between changes 5-7K??

It's possible that the timing slipped. . but maybe not likely. Often when timing slips it slips a fair amount and causes more severe symtoms than you describe.

Could you have picked up a bad load of fuel? Low cetane can cause this too. Have you run any injection cleaner thru it lately?

The injection cleaner may cause it to smoke a bit more, until that tank of fuel is run down. .

bed time, now.

Let us know,

Andy

smoke

hey George hows everything going (its Daniel) you knwo mine does the same thing I have been told that the white smoke is because of unburned fuel when it is shut down advancing the timing will fix that as far as the black smoke your afc housing spring could be getting weak. I should be coming down latter this week if you want to get together we can look at it. if so PM me with your number. and I will give you a call

Daniel

Andy, I will take you up on your offer for me to call your cell phone! Only about half of that info was in english to me. I sure do appreciate you writting all of that out though.

Daniel, what has been going on? I'm going to be in the DFW area this weekend if you want to meet there or I will be back in Stephenville on Sunday if that is better for you. My cell # is 817-793-4913

oops, forgot the info I came to say. Andy I looked at some things and the filter minder was at 10 #vacume and had not used any oil. Both were changed 2800 miles ago. You may be right on the over oiled K&N because ther is a possibility of a buddy doing it "helping out" when I was changing the oil last time. It's a 95 4x4 auto:{ (yeah, should have gotten the 5 speed)
