Anyone know where I can buy individual 68rfe parts?

Corrosion on the factory running boards on a 2017 truck

So Im pretty new to the 4th gen world. I owned a 12 valve for a long time and decided to upgrade since the truck was falling apart and i tow a whole lot all over the place. Truck is a 2013 2500, automatic, fully deleted with efi by ryan and 5 position switch and 5" turbo back. Truck stays on postition 1 at all times because its plenty strong enough, plus the trans is stock. I cranked my truck the other morning and had the exhaust brake on as i usually do. I keep it on auto at all times. After about a minute it did its normal thing, exhaust brake closed off and it began to do the whole fast warm up deal. Went back inside and looked out the window and it was dumping a solid 5 inch cloud of black smoke. I went outside to turn the brake off and it didnt change nor did i have any throttle response. Just a fuel knock when pressing the accelerator. Shut the truck off and cranked back and it still did the same thing. So i kept feathering the throttle until it came back and acted normal. Since then it has happened 2 more times. Im not ruling out turbo vanes hanging but im not 100% sure thats the problem either as the truck runs great, makes great power, boost, exhaust brake works flawlessly when towing and when not towing. Also once it does its little episode when cold it doesnt act up again until the truck is cooled down and cranked again cold. Has anyone run into this issue before? Not crazy about the VGT. I will eventually end up doing a fixed turbo swap and BD exhaust brake probably after the new year. Any info is appreciated! Also, there is no CEL when this is happeneing and no stored codes.

Sounds like it could tuning parameters for the ambient temp, but could also be several other things but the EB/VGT isn't my first thought.

Have you talked with Ryan?

Do you have any gauges or OBDII monitor?

I have not talked with Ryan yet. I have a bully dog gt tuner. At the time it was smoking my pyro was reading 850 degrees so i knew it was fueling pretty hard. I also hooked to it before i cranked it cold the last time it acted up and no codes were present and VGT was only at 22.65%. I agree with you, the turbo isnt my thought either.

Black smoke and a fuel knock when pressing the accelerator...................bad injector hanging open? I had a 5.9 do that and it went through a series of bad injectors.

X2, on a bad injector hanging up when cold. Neither my truck or my younger sons 2013 have had issues with black smoke on start up with the VGT and EB on. I need to turn my EB on after starting, as a Smarty "S67" will not enable that feature on the 3rd gen's. My son's 2013 defaults to EB on upon start up, he set this up with his EFI Live tune. We are both 5" TBE on our trucks.

id much rather put an injector in it than turbo thats for sure. It has barely any response when you press the throttle when its acting up. Just enough to make it fuel knock. let me see if i can upload this video i have of it

I cant get it to upload. So in the video you can hear the brake on, then hear the engine change tones when i give it throttle and it starts huffiing black smoke then once i let off it goes away. The first time it ever happened it was pouring smoke on its own with the EB on.

Forget about balance, you want to cut out each cylinder alone, that way you find the sticky one.
These cylinder balance test are often not valid, guide one into the wrong direction.

I’m beginning to think that too. Just cranked It about 10 min ago and it’s 43 degrees and it would not give me any throttle response and all of the sudden at 170 degrees exhaust brake shuts off and truck sounds normal and revs up like normal. Cranked it with the exhaust brake on auto and even when I turned it off it stayed on.

Disconnect both batterys, put the plus and minus lead together to discharge any capacitor. Reconnect.

That reboots your whole system.
Thats always worth a try hunting an electronic gremlin.

One more thing I’ve noticed is when I cold crank it (like this morning) my coolant temp says 100 degrees. It was 46 degrees when I cranked the truck. The coolant should’ve been 46 degrees.

How long was the truck off for?

These blocks take a long time to cool off.
