Hi, when backing the truck back in the garage I saw a pretty sizable area of soot that was blown out of the exhaust when I fired it up this morning. It sat for almost a week and was a little chilly in the garage. It has never blown out that much before. I'll usually see a few black specks but nothing like this.Only fuel mods are rv275s. I don't really notice it blowing smoke driving. It's got one of those flow through mufflers. Not sure if there's something I need to adress or not. Thanks

I'm interested in info coming out of this thread too. I've had this problem for awhile now and can't find anything to fix this. And since I use a wheelchair it makes quite a mess around the garage and tracking soot into the house. I'd like to fix it asap.

edit: I should add that this problem for me didn't go away through injector swap and a VP44 pump replacement. (I was hoping it would.)

My 2001.5 would do that when it was really wet outside and high humidity. The moisture loosen the soot, and start up blows it out. SNOKING

That is odd, I running the same thing as you only in a 2500. In Sept. We bought a house with garage been parking since and no soot. Will be watching to see if it is moisture and humidity, since rainy season is starting. Will post back if mine starts. How's the air filter? Soot build up sounds like running rich. If that's possible for a diesel.

Humidity causing this makes sense. It usually stays warm in the garage but with the drastic temperature swings here lately it was chilly and damp in the garage and warm outside. Never seen the truck, either one I've owned blow out that much. It has not done it since. As far as the air filter it appears ok.

Have had excessive soot for awhile now and live in NV, no humidity issue here...ever. I use a Smarty tuner and I can lessen the soot by going back to stock power setting but it still is there. Aftermarket injectors contribute I feel but still don't think that's the real problem. Puzzling and messy for sure.

Also use to think there was a big difference in this occurring depending on auto transmission or manual but from the sigs on this thread shows it probably doesn't make a difference. I make it a point to go gentle on the throttle until I have at least 10 psi of boost to get adequate air mixing with fuel. I watch closely my exhaust and try not to put out a big cloud of black. Doesn't make much difference. Just my thoughts....

Yes it is a mess for sure, even a small amount. That large amount it blew out I swept into a pile and was going to vacuum it w the shop vac but not before my daughter walked through it. Has your rig always done this or just start to appear one day?

My truck has done it for the longest time, I wouldn't be able to pinpoint exactly when it started but it was after I started mods (injectors, 4 inch exhaust, aftermarket air filter, some type of power module, upgraded auto transmission, etc). To minimize the mess I don't start the motor until I have coasted out of the garage onto the driveway (I have a slight slope with the garage floor) and I have a full size air compressor in the garage and use compressed air to blow out what soot does get on the floor. I'm wheelchair monkey so the wheels really are a messy problem tracking all that crap into the house. Only thing that could be worse is if I had white carpet. Can't believe we are the only one's with this issue.
