My wife rear ended a van with our '03 3500 this morning. :( Body damage to the Ram beyond the front bumper was non-existant. However the front bumper is now tilted up and into the AC condensor.

She drove the truck from the crash to work, which was only 1 mile at the most. No drivability problems that she noticed.

On her way home the check gauges light came on. She looked at the temp and it was at 245. Thankfully she pulled over immediately and called me.

Could the excessive temps be caused by a cracked intercooler? The radiator was still full as was the catch tank. She said it didn't seem to be down on power. When I started the truck at the parking lot she was in the engine idled at 1000 RPM hot. I shut it right down. She said she didn't notice if the idle RPMs were high when she was driving.

The truck is at a Dodge body shop now, but I would like to get an idea of what may be wrong since they won't be able to look at it for awhile.

a cracked IC [low on boost for the engine now] will cause excessive combistion tempratures, making EGT go way high and will make the cooling system heat up too...

You have an X-monitor, right? I assume it's reading boost? Does the boost come up normally when you accelerate? If so, the intercooler's not cracked. And no, a cracked intercooler, by itself, wouldn't generate high engine temps. What it would do is not register boost at the MAP sensor, which would prevent the injection system from delivering enough fuel, and the truck would feel like a dog.

The radiator was probably damaged - enough so that it's created a restriction inside, and you're not getting the coolant flow that you need.

Thanks for the replies. My wife said she was watching the EGT and it wasn't getting out of hand. Maybe it is just the radiator being damaged somehow.

More likely the wires are cut/damaged to the electric controlled fan clutch. They run up the back of the radiator.
