My truck has started having excessive blowby smell not so much as loosing oil. Been doing this about couple months used to only smell when serviced but then go away. Now it's there all the time. Even had passengers comment on the smell. Is it possible that it's a seal in the turbo causing this. Was reading about it on here but never could find where this has actually happened to someone causing this horrible smell. Or could this be something else. Don't believe it's a ring not loosing bunch of oil. Maybe injector don't know but would like to have it fixed. Any help on this subject would be appreciated. . Thanks

I was wondering whether it might be some kind of mold growth in the HVAC ducts.

My suggestion would be to replace the breather filter and see if that helps.

If it doesn't, then you can route the blow by tube out the back of the truck.

I have excessive blow by and it throws a lot of oil. Turns out I bought a vehicle from Phoenix, a very dusty area and the engine got "dusted". I can see the vapor when sitting at a light. Factory spec on blow by pressure is 10-12" of water column. mine at idle is 14" and reved up with now load it is near 22" All because the previous owner was lazy.

Excessive Blowby

ackermanN,

I have the same problem with my 2004. I just bought my truck from Dallas. Bringing truck to Cummins next week for compression and leak down testing. How much oil are you using ? Have you determined what's causing the blowby ? Cracked rings, worn cylinders, etc ?

Some oils have aromatics in them that you smell soon after an oil change. The smell will go away. If you have diesel in your oil you will have more "smell".

Not using any oil. If it's fuel getting in oil it must not be much. Fuel in oil would that mean a bad injector? I suspected a turbo seal putting pressure back in to engine. Truck always smelled after service. I am aware of these doing that, has on everyone i ever owned. But this one smells even 3000 miles into oil change. Never noticed it till i put tst on it.
