I have a lot of blowby on my 98 12v. the Head is less than 2 years old. I was getting alot of oil out of the blowby tube and a mist out of the top of the dipstick tube. I have installed the case valve cover breathers and still have pressure coming through the dipstick tube.

I live in Las Vegas and do not know of any decent machine shops. The question is who would you recommend to rebuild the engine within a few hundred miles of Vegas or is there a good source for rebuilt shortblocks. What should I expect to pay for either route?

I went to Industrial Injection and they were talking like $8k for a rebuild. That isn't even close to an option for me.

Are you sure the vacuum pump isn't leaking into the crankcase making it vent too much?

That said if you do need an engine you might try to get a short block from Jasper. They seem to have good quality and a decent warranty.

how do I check the Vacuum pump

how do I check the Vacuum pump

Just plug the inlet where the big hose hooks up. I am one of those who do not believe that the vacuum pump can cause excessive blowby, but it seems to be a popular internet theory. I suppose that if the big hose fell off the vacuum pump there could be a problem, but if all your vacuum accessories are working (cruise, 4X4, HVAC) then you do not have a massive vacuum leak.

My cruise and HVAC work just fine and I can switch from ac to heat (If I remember correctly the blend door is vacuum controlled) The 4x4 doesn't use vacuum anymore since I put the posiloc in

8k would be a total bells and whisles restoration will all new internals and the shop doing all the labor. start small it might just be a bad set of rings if your mileage isnt crazy. if you can yank the head off at home you might be able to diagnose it for free. a full rebuild kit would probably range from 2-2. 5k and im basing that guess on the fact that i know a powerstroke kit is a little over 3. you could find a used engine from a salvage with 150-200k miles for about 1500. you could try Diesel Specialists Inc

How many miles on it? How did the cylinders look when the head was off? Chances are you won't need to bore the cylinders, honing should be sufficient and a new set of rings & maybe bearings and you should be good to go.

Cylinders looked good there was a little bit of minor surface rust from blown head gasket but I thought I'd take care of that with a 1500 grit sandpaper. It may have been worse than I thought. The motor only has about 150k but I think the previous owner got it hot a few times
