Ordered a DTT street Race transmission

I know that most everyone is going to say something to the effect of get the 4" now and be done with it. I'll be happy to do that if someone will donate one to me;) . I could get it now but I really don't want to spend the money on it at this time if it really isn't needed.

My question is what about putting a high flow muffler in place of the factory muffler and the resignator? Will that make much difference for now?

Also, I know that the factory muffler is restrictive but is the resignator also restrictive? If it isn't then would just striaght piping the factory muffler be just as good as replacing it and the resignator with a high flow muffler?

I am getting gauges next week. Later this year I'm getting a comp and I imagine not to long after that a new clutch. I don't think that I will be going any farther then that. I do no serious towing although I'm thinking about looking into doing some hauling during my slow time of the year.

I believe Geno's Catalog has the muffler elimination kit for the stock exhaust. If you don't want to to straight piped, then swapping out the muffler might help a bit, but depending on the cost, doing that could end up being close to the cost of one of the chaeper 4" after market exhaust systems ;)

Joe Donnelly did a write up I think, in a TDR magazine a year or two back (??) about exhaust mods and their dyno results, and if I remember correctly, for a stock to only slightly BOMBed truck, exhaust mods really didn't make any significant improvement in EGT reduction or horsepower. That might have actually been his report on air filters that I'm thinking of though...  Darn this CRS!!

I went through the same thing and after reading the posts on the real benefits of a 4" exhaust I decided to just eliminate the factory muffler. I bought the muffler elimination kit from Geno's

(I think it was around $65. 00) and kept the factory resonator.

The Muffler was a PITA to remove and I had to cut it off with a torch. The results were that the exhaust was a little louder outside near the rear but just as quiet inside the cab.

The EGT's dropped about 40 degrees while towing. and no apparent difference around town.

I was told the the muffler is more restrictive than the resonator.

and I think that is true.

I have no regrets and will never put the muffler back on. If you ever decide to install a larger turbo and injectors then the 4" exhaust might be a good idea.

Hope this helps.

STraight pipe

I took of my resonator and muffler off. Piece of straight pipe will work, needs no bends. Had local muffler shop w/ 3" pipe put it on after I removed muffler and resonator. Total cost $40 for pipe and labor to weld on. Cheaper than muffler elimination kit and you don't have to do it. Muffler shop said cost would have been $40 bucks even if they cut old off cause it is just a straight piece of pipe. Trouble I found is finding shop with 3" pipe in stock.

Good luck,

Good luck,

How much louder is it without the resonator and muffler both inside the cab and outside? I was thinking of just removing the muffler because I thought that the noise would increase to much if I removed both.

My opinion on straight pipe is if you like dual exhaust on a gasser, then you'll probably like it. It sounds different than a gasser does. You can hear the turbo alot more. If you have never heard a straight pipe diesel it's just different. I love diesels, so I really like it. It is loud outside. Especially close to the tail pipe. It is real loud if you get into it. You'll notice people turning around to see whats coming! AT red lights, people will roll up there windows if they are close to tailpipe!

Wife says it's loud outside... I've been trying to think of how to explain it to ya... I just remembered I have a video with straight exhaust on it. Mine will also droan alittle bit if you have the RPM's down and are accelerating, does it for about 200 rpm. Not bad, but noticeable.

Whats your email I shoot you the video... its 1. 3 mb.
