I have an 01. 5 with a BD ex brake. I started noticing after i use the ex brake, then turn it off, when i hit the pedal again it puffs some blue smoke, then it will go back to smoking black. The blue smoke smells of oil of course. Could it be simply the oil seal in the turbo? I sure hope that is all it is. I would apprecaite any help you could give.

I know in my big truck if I used the jake on a long downgrade I will see a little blue when I put my foot back in to it, also when I have been ideling for a while the seal will drool some oil into the cool turbo and when you put a load on it the oil will burn off.

This could be caused by when your jaking awhile, cylinder temps drop. You get to the bottom, hit the gas, its like starting a cold engine. Add fuel, cyls heat up, smoke goes away. I doubt its the turbo seals Some bigrigs have that oil scud on the exhaust behind the turbo, caused by unburned fuel from idling, and flexpipe and clamps that dont seal a 100%. I have seen turbo seals blow oil out exhaust, caused by blowing air cooler clamp under high boost, sudden pressure differential unseats turbo seal. Usually you replace the clamp, run it, and the seal will find its home. Your exhaust brake will probably show the same thing, when your braking with it, the engine is in no fuel.
