Pulling a trailer to Mexico soon. I have a 97 (12 valve) and am looking for information and recommendations regarding: Exhaust Brakes and Anti-theft Systems. Some budget limitations here, so price/value is a factor. Used or salvage is OK if in good condition. Thanks!
 
exhaust brake -search TDR classified and ebay for it. i found mine on ebay at a good price. antitheft?..... mexico?... ..... sleep in your truck. lol others will tell you how to the antitheft. good luck on your trip. robert
 
I'm working on an anti-theft that is wireless, totally contained under the hood, you choose which 4 wires to open or close (max 5 amps each unless you add a power relay to that line).



Things like Crank Position Sensor 5volt or ground, ECM communication lines, ECM grounds, PCM communication, PCM grounds, CanBus, VP44 communications, VP44 grounds, ( I see you have a P pump) anything that does not carry a lot of amperage, but is critical to the ECM.



Wireless range is about 750 feet (advertised, haven't proved that yet). You do have a keypad (not key fob) to take with you (I would say about 4" long, 2" wide, 1/2" thick). The security codes are very very high quality and are not easily reproducable in the same pattern (pattern constantly changes). The keypad has 4 sets of ON / OFF latching type signals.



You can also use it like a pre-oiler for the engine. Leave the lines disconnected, crank the engine for 10 seconds (or enough to get the oil pump moving oil into the journals) connect the lines, start the engine.



Obviously does not do anything for towing or stripping the truck where it stands.

Thanks for the TDR classifieds & E-Bay suggestions, Duckcarvr. Do you think that Pac Brake is the best way to go, or are most brands pretty decent? (Any brands/models to avoid?)

Anti-Theft: Thanks for the prompt reply, Robert. I recognized your name from your many informative postings, and then noticed your recent post on this subject. You listed plenty of brands and options. Should I assume the days of a mechanical lock on a fuel line are over? Thanks again.
 
"Should I assume the days of a mechanical lock on a fuel line are over?", well, not exactely. I have a manual ball valve shutoff in my fuel system, but I have to crawl under the truck to move it to closed. Ok for long periods (days, weeks), but sort of a pain when I go to Home Depot for a short stop. I do not want to put any kind of a easily seen cable system on it because it is my last line of defense. I know where it is, but you would be hard pressed to find it. You can not see it, it is tucked way up and way behind and way far from the fuel system. I have to find it by feel only, and I know where it is.



The unit I am looking at is from Linx Technologies. Their CMD-HHLR-433 ($29) for the hand held part, and, FCTN-RLY4-433 ($59) for the wireless end. I am going to get mine from Reynolds Electronics (PicBasic Pro,PicBasic,Basic Stamp,PIC Micro,and 8051 Microcontroller Projects) web site. You HAVE TO BE SURE to get the FULL SIZE HANDHELD or you have to go into the handheld and make a couple of dip switch changes to be able to use all 4 relays (Carefully read the Linx website and down in the verbage on their new compact handhelds they mention this). I called the Renolds Electronics distributor and he said all he stocks are the full sized handhelds for that reason.



I researched several wireless ideas. None were industrial quality. Most were hobbiest at best. I do not want to be stranded if the receiver fails! The key fob units do not have enough computing power in them to be extremely reliable, reasonably secure, and not fairly easily crackable with a portable scanner type unit. The Linx Technology unit is a pretty safe unit. I have to do a little experimentation on how sensitive the Linx antenna is, and where you can put it under the hood (out of the way) and it still be able to receive the signal. Wouldn't it be fun to mount it inside the intake air box? (maybe a dummy intake air hose?), try to find it there. You want to put it somewhere that has NO relation to what it does, somewhere along the OEM wire looms so you can get connection wire to it un-noticed.



The electronic wireless is for the short stops, the mechanical is for the long stops.

I use a couple of theft delay switches. One to disable the starter and the other to disable the fuel solenoid. One is hidden and the other is on my switch panel labeled incorrectly. I think two switches is the minimum to delay a theft long enough that the thief will give up and try another vehicle. I may install another switch to add to the confusion. This one will let the truck start, but it will die very quickly. The one on my switch panel must be on to start the truck. When all switches are off the levers are all down and the engine will not start.
