Factory EBrake for new CTD

Vehicle moved from CT to SC

Trying to make up my mind on choice of exhaust brakes. One is B/D and the other is Jacobs. My transmission is a 48RE.

I am only about a little over a mile from Cummins West here in SL. It would be convenient for distance and the price of each is close + I get 10% off from being a member. Thanks for your opinion of these two products.

Which ever one you decide to get, be aware that neither one of them is approved for the 48RE in any truck older than the 2006 models.

Of the two my choice would be the BD since it provides more braking force and you don't need the extra belt. Are you also putting a torque converter lockup controller in while you are at it? Everything I've read indicates that one is needed for the exhaust brakes to work well.

McLaughlin,

An extra belt ? Hmn, now you got me thinking. Have several friends that have the B/D that love them. Yes ! you are certanly right about the trans. torgue/loc as this is neccessary for not overheating and good brakeing.

No! I did not know or was aware of another belt. This belt system is bad enough with one. I have to reconsider here.

Thank you for enlightening me to this. The B/D seems like it is a good thing.

Thanks,

Chuck

look at the Pacbrake PRXB EB as they are a new design that gives more braking in the 1500 RPM range. Pacbrake is very popular with the older auto transmission crowd [Dodge/Cummins].

The Jake brake system only has one belt. It replaces the existing belt with a longer one. A real PITA to put on for non-mechanical types like me, but OK once it's installed.

Thank you Ken & everyone else. I worked 36 years as a HD mechanic and these new trucks I try to keep from working on. As a matter of fact, I got the oil ticket book from the dealer when new. So far so good.

Thanks for the input from all you guys. I did have a Pac/Brake on my old "93" CTD but had problems with it sticking shut at times. Suppose the newer ones are better.

Photos of new Jake Brake

Please look at my 2006 RAM website in my signature. I have photos of new Jake Brake installed yesterday.

The US Gear superduty brake has this feature as well (bypass, builds pressure down low instead of bleeding it off). i've run one for yrs, had a std duty before that, would not own other brake without that feature.
