I have an 01 , 5spd with 81k. . Put a jake brake in at 10k as I haul a camper & boat up over the Cascades, Rockies & Sierras during the summer... I've noticed that the exhaust brake seems to be growing weaker... . A fellow at work said that the OE exhaust valve springs are weakening and that I should have a mechanic put in stronger aftermarket springs... . opinions????If so where might I get them?... . Thanks...

I have NEVER herd that one. Your springs are fine. I would check and make sure your brake is fully closing, or an exhaust leak before the brake. The 24 valve trucks ar known to crack at the underside of the manifold by the turbo mount

It is possible that the linkage is getting corroded & not closing all the way too. That would be the first thing that I would check. The exhaust manifold can also be a factor as BobV said. If it is cracked... then it isn't building backpressure because the pressure is escaping out the manifold. Usually if it is the manifold... you will see the soot buildup on engine parts near the manifold. The springs shouldn't be bad at that mileage.

Do you use your exhaust brake all the time or just when you are pulling something? I have had a Jake on my truck since it had 76,200 miles on it and it now has 167,126 with no problems. I use it all the time. Like cummins724 said, I would check the brake out for rust and linkage.
