Can anyone enlighten me about the available exhaust brakes for a '98 with an automatic? I understand Pac Brake sells one that requires a Torque converter lockup kit. Thanks

I believe that any exhaust brake will need to have a TC lock to be effective. You may also want to replace the Exhaust valve springs with 60 lb springs so that the back pressure from the brake doesn't cause a valve to be open at the wrong time.

Okay. Thanks. Now what can you tell me about the TC lockup kit? Does it require removal of the transmission and torque converter? How does it install?

Without a T/C lockup of some kind, all you do is slow down the engine. Several companies sell TC lock up kits or you can install a "mystery switch" as DCreed noted. .

I used a BD brake and AutoLoc. I later tried a BD TowLoc that closely emulates the transmission functions of the '06 Jake I have now. It didn't work too well with my CA version truck because of the smog stuff. I liked the way it performed but it kept setting off a CEL about the T/C lockup. I pulled it before selling my '98 and still have it in the original box. Research it and if you're interested, PM me.
