Is it OK to idle (for long periods) with an exhaust brake engaged? Or will I still have to worry about all the bad things that can happen with extended idling?:{

The exhaust brake should be disabled at idle. Most use the speed sensor\TPS to disengage at idle just like when you are on the accelerator.

Yes you can use an exhaust brake for extended idling and for warmup. When my exhaust brake is on my egt's will go to 500+ at idle which is plenty high to ensure all the fuel is being burned.

Cummins actually recommends that the exhaust brake be used for periods of extended idling. The exhaust brake puts some load on the engine and also increases cylinder temps and EGT's. This helps prevent fuel washdown of cylinder walls as well as varnish buildup on valve stems due to cold (relatively speaking) temperatures. The only real downside is potential fouling of the IAT sensor due to exhaust backflow to the intake during valve overlap.

The Cummins/Jacobs brake controlled off the ECM will remain on during extended idling periods.

Gas engines have been using a heat riser for decades. It's primary funtion was to allow faster warmup, but they do cycle back on if engine idles for a long period of time. Most new exhaust brakes use engine sensors to turn off at idle after the engine is warmed up. I believe the jacobs unit, only one approved by Cummins, does allow operation at extended idle by closing when exhaust temps drop. My Banks brake is closed until coolant temp goes over 140 or the throttle is pressed, but won't close after that. Would be nice if they would close when ECT drops below about 400

Must be something wrong with my PAC brake, engine idles forever at barely over 300 degrees, brake on or off, no difference. Does warm up faster with it on though.

Do you have a controller with your ATS transmission stuff? If you do turn it off at idle and your brake should work.

Heyboss and J, BINGO! Sitting here at Benton Harbor, MI Flying J, truck idleing, brake and controller both on, 300 degrees on the pyro. Reading TDR via wireless internet. Turned the TransCommand off. . . EGT immediately climbed to 450 degrees. DUH. Thanks fellas. By the way, Benton Harbor Flying J is a joke, gotta Wendy's instead of a restaurant, no World Series on tellabisun, and rotten RV parking. First & last time I come here unless I'm delivering in the area. I drove a couple hunnert miles to get to this J to spend the weekend. Can't load till Monday morning when factory opens. Came mostly for the Internet, guess that works so why gripe.

Cheers,

Steve J.

OTRPU,

Crappy FJ or not, it is very cool that you can be sitting there and get an answer back in a few hours. I just got a XM boom box which is very cool also but there is no way I could figure out wireless internet if I take three days just to learn this XM. By the way, the last two nights the reception on it has been spotty, figure it is the solar flare effect as it is pulling in a repeater most of the time.

Always understood that the worse thing to do was idle a cool diesel... the exhaust brake allows you to keep the engine warmed up and get it warmed up faster.

Ya, I thought it was really cool to get a response so quickly also. That's what's so neat about the TDR. I'm a convert. . . remember a couple years back when it first went subscription? I was one of those that swore I'd never pay for the service. . . obviously I'm fulla crappola. Or maybe just wiser now. My XM has been working same as always. . . don't know nuttin bout sun spots.

I was wandering- (I know nutin) Which are the best exhaust brakes for the money. I would like to get one manully for winter warm ups, I normally don't drive far enough to warm up at 20 degrees. Keep in mind I do have a budget to keep me in check. I would like to get one that I could manuly turn on & off if possible. educate me!

Pacbrake has a manual switch. I also added a remote start to my truck. Start it from in the house with the pacbrake on go out in 15 minutes and the truck is warm and ready to go.

When you say extended idle time, do you mean like 2-3 hours while catching a nap some night in a cold truck stop?? Or is thaty abit too much?

I call cummins shop. I can get a jake e-brake for $665. Is this a good deal? Is there any other parts I may need.

exhaust brake

DDT,

That sounds like a great price to me. Maybe it depends on where you live. I had one installed almost 3 years ago for 800. at the Dodge dealer. Before the install I checked with the local Cummins shop and they wanted 985, and as I said that was three years ago.
