Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) exhaust brake for warmup

Alright, on my 96' I have a Pac Brake, its got the 60# exhaust springs so all is good there.

I never tow anything with this truck, its gonna be my daily driver/12 sec. truck/sled puller eventually(all around toy).

Just wondering, since its getting cold outside, will it hurt anything to use the exhaust brake as a load to help get some heat built up faster?

It doesn't idle for any more than 10 min. in the mornings so I'm not talking about extended idle times, just enough to get some heat blowing over my skinny *ss.

It won't hurt anything. The new 3rd gens have that as a feature when you have the factory exhaust break.

Use of the exhaust brake is even recommended for extended periods of idling. I use it to warm up my truck when I'm hitching up the 5th wheel.

"Cold" for me is any time that I can't wear shorts and a short sleeve shirt comfortably, so about 65*F. I'm skinny.

I drive with the windows down and no coat, when it is 50* out.

Using the brake is just fine. Ford has used a warm-up valve (butterfly, same as a exh. brake) to do the same thing on the PSD powered trucks.

Well you just answered a question that I didn't even ask. I go to school with a guy that has a 7. 3 PSD and I had my exhasut brake on and hit the go pedal to rev at him a little bit and he said that his truck makes a similar sound but he doesn't have an exhaust brake. Good job, now I have an answer for him.

My dad has an 01 and 02 ford and they both have the warm up valves on them and we wired it up to work as an exhaust brake. Works crappy compared to a pac brake but better than nothing. Kind of like comparing his powerstrike to my cummins :-laf :-laf

the EBPV is kinda a pain in the you know what when its cold out it dont really allow you to go more then 10 mph and it makes quite the swooshing noise i am thinking of wiring mine so i can manually turn it on an off its really starting to get to me

You're welcome. Don't know if Western Diesel is still around, but they had a control box that would allow the warm-up valve to be used as an exhaust brake.

I can sure recollect many times that is what they sound like, i. e. a Cummins with the ebrake on.
