Exhaust Brake Noise

I am towing a 10K 5th wheel on a long trip. When we started about 2500 miles ago the exhaust brake by PAC Brake was working properly. Now when it is used particularly at low speed we are hearing a high frequency squeel. If I turn the exaust break off the noise stops. I use the brake every day.



What can I do to stop the noise?

I have a Jacobs brake, do not know much about a Pac but I would activate the brake and look to see if the actuator is fully closed or is it bound? you may have to assist it with your hand, also look for possible holes where the exhaust could be leaking out causing the wistle???or you could have a gasket out too... ... ... ... . its a start... ... ... ... ... I had that on my 98 24V, I looked several times before I found a crack in the exhaust manifold. Check to see if all the manifold bolts are tight.

Sounds like you have a leak of some sort. Check those manifold bolts, especially the ones at the rear of the block. I had the same type of sound when I lost a rear manifold bolt, worth a look.

Chuck, get yourself a mirror and check the underside of the ex. manifold in the middle. I have a BD brake and have used it daily for 3years. About 3 weeks ago I noticed a high picted sound like it wasnt closing all the way. Looked averywhere for aleak. finally looked under the manifold and bad news, it was cracked all the way across. I am ordering a ATS three piece with turbo one Monday from Piers Diesel. Good luck hope its something simple!,Dave

Missing Bolt

Thanks for the input. I found both of the #6 set of bolts for the exhaust manifold finger tight. And was able to tighten several others just a little bit. The engine was cold. I could not find a lower bolt for #4. I think there is a hole for it but I'm not certain that one was supposed to be there.



Am I missing a bolt?



Tightenening the bolts has eliminated the noise we heard when the exhaust brake was operating. I'm making progress.

Chuck, good catch... ... . my buddie lost one a month ago from the very back and had to order a new one as well as a spacer too, I told him to check the torque a while back but he didnt get to it :{ ... ... ... Kevin
