On the older trucks the exhaust brake "jake brake" was very loud. Most cities restricted there use. Is this a different type of brake than the one for our trucks? Are the ones on our trucks noisy?

Probubly dumb questions, but I have no experience with Jake Brakes.

As far as I know, our exhaust brakes are legal everywhere. Mine is not loud, but at idle, it makes a kind of hissing sound.

Jake Brake = ENGINE brake

Engine brakes are noisier, and much more complex, than exhaust brakes. My understanding of engine brakes is that when applied, valve timing is altered, turning the engine into a large air compressor.

Many towns ban the use of engine brakes. I don't know of any restriction on our exhaust brakes.

Thomas is right, we have jake brakes on our engines and the basic understanding i have of the system is that it shuts off valves causing higher engine pressure to slow down the engine itself... . and it is pretty loud

the exhaust brakes i have heard around here are not bad at all

John the answers about an engine break causing the engine to act somewhat like a compressor is correct. It seems everyone in my family is involved in deisel. Dad a mechanic for years, brother and uncles was and still otr drivers. Much noiser than the exhaust brakes we use. The engine break works better but boy can it screw up an engine if not adjusted properly or gets out of adjustment. Hope this helps.
