I am experiencing a belt squeal only when I use the factory exhaust brake.

I just replaced the serp belt since it was getting very checked and it had been leaving alot of belt rubber on the backside (idler) pulleys.

Any one else experience this?

This is an 07. 5 6. 7 with 6 spd auto.

Thanks

Sounds like the idler pulley is trying to seize. I always replace the idlers on anything when I change the belt.

Are you sure it's a belt squeal? Look at the EGR cooler to manifold connection for a line of black soot indicating a slight leak. Sometimes the two nuts will get a little loose and the gasket will leak.

mMy truck has had a similar squeal since new. It will sqeal sometimes under boost while towing and the EB off.

sevice tech told me it was normal, I spoke with the mechanic and when he heard it happened with EB off he ordered a turbo. R&R the turbo no change.

I think its an air leak and have requested a pressure test but have got nowhere. I will ask again when I go in for the J35 flash.

I will also check the EGR/manifold location as sag2 suggests.

Sag2, PM me with which dealership your at if you don't mind.

I have a 07 1/2 Dully with 400,000 miles. When cold I get the squeal noise if the eng brk is on. Turn off the brk and the noise goes away. Once warm, no noise.

On this trip my truck will run 24hrs a day for abt a week, and no noise at all. Shut down and get cold---the noise returns for awhile.

When I get home will have the belt changed as this is the original belt and will see if that helps

My 08 was making a squealing sound when EB was on and it turned out to be a cracked manifold. The extra backpreasure was squealing even though it sounded fine without brake on. It did smoke a little more but not noticeable until i put new 2 pcs manifold on and really watched the difference. At first it sounded like turbo going bad.

Jack,

You're apparently an RV transporter operating out of IN.

When you have time back home from a delivery please take a few minutes and tell us how your truck is holding up and what problems or parts failures you've experienced.

Sounds like what I did with my old 2001. I saw a 2001 manifold that had 11000 miles on it and it had a 1/16" crack. . because of the difference in heat expansion between the block and the manifold. .

My big rig I drive has the Cummins ISX 14 litre . . It has a 3 piece manifold from factory. So Dodge goes cheap and puts an inferior manifold on it. . I saw that and I bought the 3 piece. . never had any problem with it. . So now I am waiting til this goes out. . Maybe next year I ll get it. . my truck only has 23K on it. . . getting a bigger fuel tank and airbags this year.

My '01 has 365k miles on it now with the same OEM exhaust manifold. It was off once when the head was removed to replace the seeping head gasket at around 215k miles. A new exhaust manifold gasket was installed and the manifold bolts retorqued.

The engine has had Bosch 275hp motorhome injectors since it was new and for years I allowed it to pull grades with a trailer behind under full throttle down to 1600 rpm with the EGT showing 1300*. All of them don't crack.
