I tow the max for the 04. 5 and am in need of an exhaust brake. I only have 4k miles on the truck so am warranty conscious. Has anyone had problems with any of your 03/04. 5 cummins due to the exhaust brake? Items received below from my seaching for info from Cummins and Dodge.

Received Sep 3, 2004: "Cummins does not approve any other product than our own. Dodge has a hold on any exhaust brakes at this time on there 2004. 5 trucks. Please check with Dodge before installing an exhaust brake. "

Received Sep 9. 2004: "Cummins is correct- Dodge and Cummins have found engineering concerns

regarding the compatibility of the exhaust brakes with the '03/04 Dodge

Rams. I am sorry I cannot give you a more favorable reply. "

Exhaust brakes

If your truck in an auto, no exhaust brake and warranty coverage. If your truck is a manual then the exhaust brake is OK. Some on here are running them on autos anyway. Ken Irwin

I sent a request to Jacobs via their website asking for details of the hold on their exhaust brakes, but never recieved a reply. I have one installed on my truck. I fully expect that they will get this issue resolved as a lot of money is at stake, especially for Jacobs, but they sure arn't saying much about it. Good luck.

I described my truck in the e-mail to cummins and dodge. It is a 4. 5 cummins, 6 sp manual, 3. 73 rear end and I still got that "not compatible" answer. I'll probably go ahead and install an exhaust brake unless I get some responces that indicate a big problem. Thanks for your responce.

I stand corrected

Rickricket, I stand corrected  . I see over on Carlton Bayle's Exhaust brake thread that their is some kind of issue. I can't think what it can be but I'm running a BD brake on my 03. Ken Irwin

Hi, from what I understand the problem with the Jacobs is a poor fit between the brake and exhaust pipe. There have been supposely exhaust gas leakages resulting in possible fire. When I was looking into a brake I called a local Cummins dealer and they were, at that time, installing either the Jacobs and or Pacbrake. So give Cummins a call and see what they say. Cummins supposely has approved the Pacbrake but not Dodge. And Dodge maintaines the warranty. I also have a six speed.

Good luck

I actually sell several large Dodge dealers... their some of my best customers... . The removal from sale of the Jacobs is because of a manufacturing problem and I'm guessing that it will be solved soon... .

Take a look at the PacBrake web sight... . www.pacbrake.com and see what you think...

You will find that both Jacobs, and PacBrake are approved for CAT, Cummins, and other large diesel engines..... both have engine and exhaust brakes to fill their needs... Like Jacobs, the PacBrake connects to the ECM and functions in the same way... . one interesting point... PacBrake was the first exhaust brake approved for the 5. 9.....

Hope this has helped...

Jim

Does anyone know whether the engine brake issue concerning the automatic transmission will be resolved in the 2005 model? Also, what is the status of a five speed automatic for the Dodge heavy duty?

Seems to be there should be a recall, TSB, or at least a notice that one of these days my truck is going to go "poof, crackle, pop, melt, kaboom!" :(
