I have a 04. 5 with a Mopar/Cummins exhuast brake. The problem is that everytime the pump engages or disengages (worse on engage) I hear a chirp or squeal. I have been running it the brake for about 1 year and 15k miles, this problem started about 5k ago, I thought/think it the belt slipping. I just replaced the belt with a new one (mopar/cummins) and the problem still exist. Anyone else have the same problem? The pump works fine and sounds normal once it engages. The squeal last for maybe a second.

Truck is 6spd, about 33k miles.

My 06 does the same thing . About 40000 on the brake 55000 on the truck. Mine is the Jacobs brake. I figure its the butterfly valve stem leaking by a bit.

Watchout!!!

Better watch out!!! Look on the vacuum pump and there will be a circle on the end of it... see if there is grease evident around the circle.

My pump started "chirping" on my '06 at about 32k miles. I investigated things and found some grease leaking out, but couldn't remember if it was always there or not. At 36k miles, the bearings seized in the vacuum pump, broke the serpentine belt, snapped the idler pulley arm, sent the idler pulley into the back of the radiator, and broke the fan shroud!!! Not to mention, all grooved pulleys became smooth as melted rubber bits hardened and glazed over... what a mess! :-laf

New pump on for 10k, and I've not noticed any chirping or leaking grease. So, at least from my experience, a chirp is an ealy (or maybe not so early) indication of worse things to come... best change it out on your time table, instead of having it ruin a vacation like me!

I am going to take a look for vacuum leaks first.

So how much is a new vacuum pump? I guessing that's not a cheap part.
