Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Exhaust brake with 4" downpipe

I think I read somewhere that the Jacobs brake that you can purchase from Dodge will not work with aftermarket exhaust. Is this correct? I'd would like to purchase one but need some advice on selection. I like the $600+ price tag on the Jacobs brake as opposed to the $1000+ on the aftermarket brakes. I would appreciate some advice. As long as you have the stock turbo and exhaust elbow the Jacobs will work fine with a 4 inch downpipe because the connection point is still the 3. 5 inch. I have a 4 inch Hog system and a Jacobs on mine.

I forgot about the downpipe still fitting on the stock elbow. I think I'll go for the Jacobs. I figure it will pay for itself over time and help out in emergency situations. Thanks for the replies.

a remote mount brake would be needed with a hx 40 or larger style turbo (true 4" bandclamp style downpipe)

I found the Jacobs at mydodgeparts.com for $631. Do they get any cheaper than that? If so, where?

That sounds about the best, I found mine on e-bay brand new in the box for around $520 I think. If your creative I have two C-series Cummins inline exhaust brakes but you'd have to do some pipe fabbing and actuation rigging, they are pressure actuated and not vacuum though.



If you ever plan on upgrading the turbo do what Bob and Bob said and go with an inline type that goes in the pipe. I'll use one of my C-series brakes when I change turbos.

Like Tim was sayin before I have an Inline remote unit (About midway down the truck) And People have said that it feels like it brakes harder than a turbo mount of the same brand (BD). That way IF you upgrade to whatever turbo you wnat you can keep your brake And not worry about selling the special purpose brake in which you just purchased.

That sounds good but aren't they much more expensive? I don't think I've seen one under $1000.

I think I got mine for 680 - 700. I tell ya that thing has needed next to ZERO maintenance (One time a Valve froze but we popped it off and WD-40 the thing 2 years ago and she still has been great!!

What kind of noise does the brake make when it is engaged. I want it to be loud! I wish we had engine brakes so we could pop like the big rigs.



I just had an offer on what looks to be a good used Jacobs brake, so I may go that route instead. Thanks for the replies.
