With a stock auto the e-brake is worthless. The reason for this is that when you lift your right foot so the throttle goes to idle the torque converter clutch lets go. The engine drops to idle RPM and off you go down the hill like a runaway freight train.

DTT sells a Smart Controller. It's a box that will control TCC lockup so the brake will work. Or you can wire up a manual lock up switch. I use one, but I really don't recommend it because you can damage your transmission if the manual lock up switch is not used correctly.

exhaust brake

JSmith,

I have a 96 auto 2WD with a Pacbrake. I also have the Smart Control from DTT as well as well as a TC & VB. I do not think Bill at DTT recommends using the Smart Control unless you have a beefed up VB but I could be wrong. Someone please correct me if this is inaccurate.

At any rate, when set up properly to keep the TC locked up, an exhaust brake will greatly improve braking, especially when towing or hauling a heavy load. Mine helped prevent a disaster last year while towing.

Check out various brands before jumping into the pond. Depending on which brand you purchase you may get valve springs included, which you will need, with the e-brake as part of the kit. I got mine thru a party that advertised them in the classifide section on this web site. It was the best price too.

If you wish more detailed information regarding my purchase, please PM me.

Good luck, John

I currently have a BD exhaust brake controlled by a DTT Smart Controller (along with a DTT TC and VB). Prior to my Smart Controller, I had a BD TorqLoc controlling my exhaust brake. Let's just say, the DTT Smart Controller is LIGHT YEARS ahead of the TorqLoc, or any similar device!

That said, a DTT prepped VB (or equivalent) is required in order to work with the Smart Controller. If the 2nd gear lockup/retarding feature is to be utilized (man, this is SWEET!), then you are limited to a DTT prepped VB. This setup, correctly installed and adjusted, will work almost as well as an exhaust brake on a five or six speed manual. :D

If you purchase an exhaust brake for a 94 through early '98, you will need to change out the valve springs to the heavier, 60-pound counterparts... 24v engines already come with the 60-pound vlave springs.

DTT shop

Anyone who is thinking about having work done on their truck at DTT should start planning. The first open date I could get is July 29... ... .....

Congrats on a wise decision ;)

DTT shop

In addition... the lady I talked to at DTT made all the arrangements including making motel reservations for us. Then faxed everything to me with directions to the shop.

Sounds like customer service reborn !!!

Yes, but a word of warning on the stretch of main highway (Canada-1), the Mounties hide in the dip at the bottom of the hill to Abbotsford, just waiting to zap you with their hand-held radar, so be conservative, until you're comfortable with the situation.

Whilst your truck is in the TLC shop :D, head west over to Vancouver and get a ride on one of the ferries from Horseshoe Bay over to the Island - you may even get to see some whales on the way! Bill was talking about getting some camper hook-ups sorted out whilst I was there in April 2001, so that is another option worth following through.

Speaking from personal experience, you'll never look back. Say Hi to Bill, Vinny , Shanti and Stefan for me and if you get the chance, take a short drive over to PDR and see Piers. (BTW, take your checkbook or credit card):D:D
