I am going to buy an exhaust brake for my 6 speed. I have heard about problems with the exhaust brake engaging while shifting; i. e. no throttle and the exhaust brake engages when not required. Banks claim that their delays solves this problem. I am looking at installing a BD brake but do I have to stick with Banks due to the shifting problem. Do any BD exhaust owners with manuals have any problems? Thanks
 
I have a BD on my 6spd. It is great. I run the two speed switch on the stick. The brake is on and off quickly. You can leave it on and shift if you are used to it. Just a little throttle pressure keeps the brake from engaging during shifts. I have never had any problems with the brake at all.

K, I have a BD brake and it works great. I have a 5er that weighs in around 9500 lbs, I think it is the best bomb on my truck so far. I didn't mess with ecm hookups, two seconds delays for shifting or pedal switches. I have the two speed switch on the stick wired directly to the vacuum switch, pull it on, push it is off. Nice and simple and it only comes on when I tell it to.

I just installed a pac brake on my 6 speed last week. It has a three to four delay after the throttle has been released. that gives plenty of time to eather up or down shift before the brake automatically engages, or use it manually with a switch on

the gear shift. The type of switch that GM used on the old split two speed differential

I have a BD 4" remote mount, and i hooked it up through the ecm on the truck, then to a 2 speed shifter switch. It is the only way to fly folks. I can use the cruise control and not have to worry about bumping the switch and engaging the brake at speed, plus the 2 second delay is nice for shifting. I believe you use pin 20 on the ecm, i have the part # for the pigtail wire that goes in the ecm at home, i will try to dig it up.



Basically kschefler, to answer your question, no you do not have to stick with the banks brake, any of the e--brakes can be wired to work with the factory supplied e brake circuit through the ecm on the newer trucks

Thanks for the reply from all. Rubberneck any info would be appreciated I think the delay would also be beneficial for shifting. If currently have the stock 3 inch exhaust if I order the 4 inch brake does BD have an adaptor to connect the 4 inch brake to the 3 inch pipe. I would like to wait with changing my exhause later but should buy the 4 inch brake now; can this be done?
 
My advice is think about what you want to do with your truck. If you are going to stay with the stock turbo, there is no advantage that i can see to going with the 4" remote mount. If you are sure you are going to stay with the stock turbo, go with a direct mount unit. My dad has a pac brake, i have the BD unit, they both are nice units, and i have driven a truck with the jacobs/dodge unit. It was nice also. I went to the 4" because i knew that i would eventually put a bigger turbo on (B1).



It is nice to have the delay for shifting, but like earlier stated, very slight throttle pressure is enough to keep the brake from activating. My biggest concern was the cruise control issue. Our trucks have electronic cruise, not the manual style of the older trucks. therefore, the pedal is all the way up when cruise is on. If you used the older style throttle pedal shut off switch, it would allow the brake to activate when cruise is on. I can just see my wife hitting the ebrake switch while cruising down the freeway:rolleyes:



What I did was use pin 20 of the ecm to activate the switch side of a relay, i then ran a power source directly from the battery to my shifter mounted switch, then to the power side of the relay. The power then exits the relay and goes to the vacuum solenoid. I think you could probably eliminate the relay altogether, as the pin 20 circuit is rated for a 10 amp fuse i believe, and the vacuum solenoid only draws like 0. 5 amps peak. but i would rather be safe then sorry. Maybe somebody here will mail you a copy of the jacobs break installation instructions, thats were i got my info when i wired up my unit. I will look for the part number from the pigtail, i got it at a local cummins dealer. everything else can be gotten at radio shack.
