MY friend has a 2001. 5 H. O. speed grossing about 28,000 lbs. with his horse trailer, the truck has plenty of power but slowing it down is his problem, the question is , which exhaust brake would any of you recommend for his use? Any info I'll pass along to him.

I've got a BD Exhaust Brake. Cost me about $800 installed. I'm towing about 11K. With my manual transmission in combination with my BD, I rarely hit my brakes going down hill. I think it's a must. There are lots of other brands out there. From what I've heard and read, they all seem to work well.

I have the Jacobs exhaust brake from the Dodge dealer $675 if I remember right. I like it and use it all the time. It has a 2 second delay before it kicks in, it works with the ECM. B D and Pac Brake do not have the delay and are on when the switch is on.

If you go with the Jacobs it is about a 3 or 4 hour job to put it in.

I use mine all the time and love it.

Good Luck. :D

See Ya

Chris

Check out "Massdiesel" he had one on his tuck and i was asking him alot of questions about the setup. He knows his stuff.

Gunny put his Pac Brake on 2 weeks ago and it is very effective. He has the B&D switch on the shifter and has no delay. I am installing my Pac Brake Sunday and will hook it up to the ECM as a 2 or 3 second delay won't bother me.

I have the Jacobs E Brake and love it. It is easily my most used accesory. I believe all of the various brakes are good, but the clicking on a US Gears one drove me nuts. The 1 1/2 second delay on my brake was built in to allow you to have it "on" continuously without it actually cycling while shifting up a gear.

I installed the switch included with my brake cause at the time I didn't know any better... now I have the BD shifter switch. Its much handier.

Depending on what your(his) future plans are, the 4" brake under the body is worth considering. If he plans on going to a bigger turbo (HX40), that would be about his only option. If he is keeping the same turbo (or one of Piers new turbos!), I believe the brake mounted up in the engine compartment would be my choice.

The E Brake is an easy install. If you choose that one, let me know and I will send ya my phone number in case ya get stuck. Save yourself some money on labor.

4 in underbody

Where is a person to find one of these? On a web site or just by calling BD? It would be perfect for my setup being 4 inch and all.

BD has a website if you click on "Links" at the top of the page. Another source is Piers!

You can get the Jacobs e-brake for $540 + 12 shipping mail order. Call 800-559-6698. Great deal and very good service. I put mine in myself and had no problems.

I mounted the switch to the bottom of my brake controller, which is mounted where the ash tray belongs. No visible holes if it is ever removed, and the brake switch is easy to reach.

I have a Pac Brake with the controler mounted onto the ECM. I have the 1. 5 to 2 second delay which is nice when shifting. I believe the computer determins the delay and not the particular brand of exhaust brake.

PS. How many horses is your buddy towing to get GCVW up to 28,000 pounds??? and how can your buddy afford a Dodge if he owns that many horses (poor guy)???:D :D :D

jake brake is great!!

I use my (jacobs)brake loaded or unloaded, great for big hills or just stopping at a stop sign. I must have very little wear on my brakes cuz I use the jake brake all the time. The only time I shut it off is when idling, it makes a little more noise. Great when I 'm hauling that 20,000 lb load.

Where do you get that great B&D switch??

Dittos on Brandon and Rob. . I have a 4" underbody mount BD brake, lots of stopping power. I think the biggest ? is as to whether your friend has a 4" pipe now or plans on upgrading to one in the near future. If so, by all means get the 4" BD, it's awesome.

All you guys running the BD brake, I just installed mine and is it supposed to sound kinda like an air compressor releasing air? Mine makes a pis. . pis. . pis. . pis sound. I thought it would kinda sound like one on a big rig. I am 100% sure I have everything right but just want to make sure on the sound. I wasnt able to check my pressures at idle (got too late) and i wont use it till i make sure they are to the specs. Would that have anything to do with it? If so, if I find my pressure is wrong, how do I adjust it?

Ramm

You've got it right. It's not going to sound like the big rigs. They have engine brakes (has to do with controlling the exhaust valves), while you have an exhaust brake, which causes exhaust restriction. It should make a pulsating whistle sound.
