I love my mufflerless stacks, however, every now and then i would like a little less noise. Straight stacks are very loud, in fact they vibrate the back seat and rattle things in the interior at certain rpm's. But you gotta love em!:D

I am looking into some sort of exhaust valve that can divert the exhaust into the stacks in one position, then in the other position through a muffler and out the rear. I have seen this type of setup on cigerette boats. I belive they call it silent choice. The boats use an electric switch to change the position of the valve. Problem is that these boats inject cooling water into the exhaust and therefore the the diverter valve they use does not have to be able to wistand heat like it would in the exhaust of a truck. Does anybody know of any product out there that might fit my application? I have not had any luck myself so I am starting to think I might have to custom build something.

PS: I saw a cable activated diverter in JC Whitney several years ago but I think it was only for 2 1/2'' pipe.

You are correct, The Merc system is called "silent choice". I work in a high-performance offshore boat shop part-time, and it's amazing how many of these systems we throw away every year. The problem with the Merc diverters is that while the straight through openings are 4" round, the diverted output is an oval shape. Also, the system is typically operated with a compressor and 1/4" plastic tubing going to the air-operated actuators, which are spring-loaded. I have seen some systems made of stainless steel that have 4" round opening on all three outputs, and are operated by a 12v solenoid, but I'm not sure of the company that makes them. I'll do some more research. We might even have an old set kicking around the shop. I'll keep you posted.

dual stacks

What a great idea!! I've been thinking about dual stacks for awhile but I always thought you would run too close to the fuel tank on the driver's side. Where do you run the exhaust for the other (driver's) stack?? In front of the fuel tank?? And where would you put all that other mess (the junction of the 2 systems and the valve body???)

Thanks for the info guys! I was hopeing to use a single 4'' diverter that I could mount where i currently have a 90' pipe going up through the truck bed. One of those stainless marine ones might do the trick. I will have to ask a couple of guys I know that are really into boats.

Monkfarm, I have a single 4'' pipe that goes up through the bed about 2 feet in from the passenger side. It is attached to a Y pipe that feeds each stack. Look up oasis-3 in the members section to see pictures. Some guys have gone across under the truck. I havent seen one up close so I am not sure how it is done.

PS: This project may get delayed slightly after I backed my trailer into a construction site in the dark tonight and made contact with a pallet of block in the passenger side door!:{

If you find a diverter that Kevin isn't interested in, please let me know. I have a project that could use a 4" electically operated diverter and while it wouldn't have to be stainless, the downpipe that I'd fit it to is. You can email me or post it here if you find anything. Thanks, Larry

I did some more research, and the company that makes the 4" stainless piece is Corsa. I contacted them, and they said that this diverter would not hold up to the high temps imposed in an automotive application. That is a shame, because they would be ideal for what you guys want to do. Maybe I'll try experimenting with an old set if they become available. If something else comes along, I'll start a new thread. Take care, and happy holidays to all.
