exhaust "drivers choice"

on some boat i have been on (mostly donzi and sea ray) they have a switch called "captain choice" for the exhaust. what this will allow is the captain to choose if the exhaust would exit underwater or above. has anybody taken that concept and changed to maybe running a stock exhaust around quiet areas with a switch attached to a straight pipe exhaust for when we need the higher air flow or more noise?

I remeber seeing a post about that and it even had some pictures. If I remeber the picture right the striaght pipe ran behind the muffler towards the inside of the truck.
