I was messin' around under the hood and noticed on the exhaust elbow there was a place cast into the elbow on the left side as you look standing from the front of the truck. It is round and looks like a center punch mark in the middle. It looks like a place to drill to put in a thermocoupler for a pyro. Some trucks have them others don't. Is this cast to put in a pyro?

Don't know if that is designed for that purpose, but that is where I installed several temp probes before I started putting them in the manifold.

amsoilman,

How hard was it for you to get a drill on it? Pretty confined back there. I like the fact that there is more metal there to tap than up higher on the elbow. Thanks for the help.

I do believe that is why that is cast there, as Cummins recommends post turbo ( I know I know, there's nothing wrong with pre turbo ). You have to take the elbow out to drill and tap it but it's no big deal. I always go underneath with my impact wrench, a wobble and a deep socket and extension. Zip the two bolts loose then let the clamp up top loose and you've got it. Put it in a vice or just hold it between your knees on the ground and drill and tap away. I've done both the 1/4npt thermocouple and the 1/8npt and I like the 1/8 better, just personal preference I guess. Hope this helps.

I figured the elbow would have to come off, that is where I am stuck. The tools I need are in Ohio, the Army says I have to be in Texas :( . Post turbo suits me for now, my incredibly shrinking exhaust manifold tells me I will be pre turbo later  . Thanks for the tip.

Kernel,

If you ever get up towards Ft. Hood we can take care of the tools/drilling part. That is if you don't mind working with an old crusty retired W4 aviator that once flew with 377th Dustoff.

GAmes,

Thanks for the offer, don't know how my schedule will pan out, the Army's got me on a short leash and I'm still waiting on my boost gauge to come in before starting my project. That would work out good if I could come up to Hood, got a couple of buddies in the 1st Cav I wouldn't mind dropping in on.

No, it wouldn't bother me to work you "crusty" types, that's who keeps us young guys straight. LOL.

Kernel,

PM me if you get a chance to come up here. I'll let you know what my planned schedule is. If you are going to the rally in Kerrville (a real short hop for you) I'll see you there.

Scott..... I told you I have all the air tools... . Just let me know when you want to come over and use them... . I am going to be killing my KDP this week, as well as installing the long awaited PDR super turbo with the 4" PDR super exhaust!!!! :D :D :D Just let me know when you would want to get together... . I have everything over here.....

Your right Ron, they do have alot of tools over at auto craft, only thing is there's only one guy I would trust working with (willing to help is more like it), and he doesn't work there all the time. Their hours of operation conflict with my work schedule most of the time too. As you may very well know, the Army isn't the greatest at making things convenient. Things will work out, as long as I can get a certain retailer to get their stuff straight  .
