ding, ding, ding, exhaust filter full. . just left the house a 100 miles ago, 950 more to go. The truck seems to be running ok, same power, same mpg. 319,000 miles. Ok, now a couple of questions ???'s

Is it alright to drive ?

Is there anyway to delete the warning on the overhead ?

Is there any way to have the DPF cleaned and also the cat. ???

Know of any good shops in the Devil Lake, ND area ??

By the way, I did make it the rest of the miles. Just trying to fiquire out my options. . Thanks to all. .

We've got an 08, 5500 that has something like 110K miles... maybe more... we've seen this a couple of times after long idle times in town (heating) during cold weather... . and the percentage has been as high as 90%... than it kicks into a regen... might take 20-30 minutes on the freeway and than everything is fine... .

Unlike Ken, were in an area where it has to be installed to clear during an annual inspection process as well as working... but someday he'll have the same issue as the laws continue to change...

SC will be the last for sure. I remember when we moved to Greenville in 1992, they stopped requiring vehicle inspections, it was such a socialist outrage to have the govt look after everyone like that. No telling how many have died because of that!

I think TDR member EB, an oilfield hotshotter, posted a year or two ago that his '07. 5 C&C experienced a plugged DPF around 225,000 miles and had to be replaced.

You are way beyond that mileage so it is not a big surprise that yours is full. I think the DPF used on our RAM C&Cs can not be cleaned but has to be replaced (or removed if you can tolerate the CELs, codes, and worry about failing an emissions inspection.

I don't remember now what EB said it cost installed at a dealer but it was in an old post of his in the C&C forum. Not cheap, unfortunately.

I guess it is a coin toss . . . a tank full of DEF from time to time or a replacement DPF at around 250k miles. Thank the EPA.

Dodgetruckparts.com has it for $ 1650 plus $ 200 core charge. 6 bolts and it's off and back on. I just hate to unload the cash... . Did I say the truck seems to be running ok. .

Mine cracked and was blowing soot at around 170k. The dealer said the dpf needed to be replaced. At that time the price was $2200. The tech said the usual life was expected to be 150 to 175k. At that time I was running close to 100k a year and couldn't see spending an additional $2200 every year and a half to two years so a few things disappeared and I have had absolutely no problems with the truck since, with the exception of u-joints. Anyone found any that hold up? I'm going to put one from NAPA on tomorrow. It can be greased, the last two from Dodge lasted about 35k apiece.

TulsaOkie, I was in Tulsa about two weeks ago. I believe the whole city is under construction. Went to a place called Chart Cooler Services. I'm running pretty hard again after a 9 month layoff, up to 265k now.

It would be cheaper to buy a Smarty Jr and a "race" exhaust and ditch it. .

The truck will probably go into Limp mode if you leave it full for too long.

Has anyone considered retaining but gutting the DPF if you decide remove it? If the gutted, hated device remained in place it might slip past some very basic forms of emission equipment inspections.

And a software genie that tells the computer that it doesn't have to go into regen... ... is that what Smarty does? Interesting idea HB... .

Done. But I will tell you that is some very hard stuff. Some kind of ceramic.

I have a old DPF that I took off a wrecked truck, I'm just not sure of the condition of it, maybe the torch will come out and i'll open it up. I not sure how the computer will read it, didn't know if there had to be some back pressure or not. Still have 1200 miles till I get home, so I'll have a few hours before I have to make a decision... I hope.

EB, Tulsa roads suck !!! but there trying to fix'em, all at one time... Next time thur, hollar and I'll buy ya breakfest. It's a open invite to all TDR members.

This was the first time my overhead ever went off, 80%... 90% and then full within 50 miles. I'm keeping those fingers crossed.....

Good luck. I hope it has some ability to clean itself enough to get you home without going into the limp mode or other crisis.

Good luck... . If it does go into limp mode maybe put the junk yard dpf on and save the old one to gut?

the 08 ford I just traded in was only rated for 120k before the dpf was to be replaced. (they would be sent out) then you got 80k out of the replacement. (at 2k a pop)

made it back to Tulsa, ordered the part and it arrived Friday afternoon FedX. The DPF was wrapped in plastic and had been rolling around in the fedx truck all day. $131 bucks for shipping I could at least got a $2 box. Installing it tomorrow, update will be soon.
