Is there any consenus on whether or not the high EGTs that the HO engines put out are really bad? My "office" 04. 5 3500 6 sp will climb to 1100 to 1200 while running solo, with about 1/4 load on a long hill. Towing is higher, of course. Then it'll climb to temperatures that would cause me to panic with my own 1996.

The "office" truck takes me into some pretty remote places, and I want it to be more reliable than the 1998 Chevy 6. 5 that it replaced. In defence of the Chevy, it stranded me in some of the most beautiful locations in the western states. I have to give it that.

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm not sure what the normal temps guys are seeing on the 3G engine, but overall they're making these engines run a lot hotter for emission purposes.

Where is the temp sensor installed?

My 03. 5 3500 HO 305/555 6 sp will cruse around 400 to 600 and 700 to 800 up 6% grades solo. But when driving through CO pulling a 7000 pound enclosed car trailer above 10,000 ft the EGT is 1100 to 1175 and 25 PSI boost at 65 mph, WOT.

Your EGT seems high to me but you have the 325/600 engine and muffler?

I have a straight pipe which reduces the EGT.

Hi Matt,

I know we're comparing "apples to oranges" here but, my '03, HO, somewhat similiarly equipped, is seeing similar EGT's to what Turbo Bob is seeing.

I believe I read that the newer engines are designed to run at the higher temps. and that provisions have been made for more heat resistant parts such as valves, etc.

BTW, I noticed you are in Glendale. I'm up in the 35Ave-Bell area. Have a Glendale Zipcode.

Prior to my cat failing and eventually falling off :D, and prior to my EZ, I could see in excess of 1300 solo. Since my visit to Rip's shop, and addition of a complete AFE intake (filter and torque tube), my EGT's have dropped 150-200 degrees. Even with my PMCR on level 3 I have a hard time exceeding 1300. It's my opinion that the stock intake, cat and exhaust put additional breathing stress on the engine... all in the name of appeasing the EPA... smoke'm if ya gottem!

The temp on my SO running solo without the Edge EZ installed, and not towing a load, I am topped out at about 975+ or -. With a the 11,000 trailer I am getting up into the 1050 range. Now if I run the Edge and depending on which setting I have, anywhere from 1150 up to 1300. When I first got the edge I decided to jump on the freeway and see what it would do. I had my foot on the floor and the EGT jumped up to 1400 for about a split second. At that point I was up to 80+ and I backed off and the EGT's dropped to 875.

I am glad to see that I was not the only one that was somewhat concerned about the EGT's. To me they seem a bit high. But with more horsepower comes more fuel and more heat.

my 325/600 runs 600 to 900 degrees solo on any kind of grade. With the banks turned up all the way I still have not seen 1300. Now I have banks gauges and exhaust and considering how every one on this sight feels about banks I might not be seeing reality(I dont anyway!). But the way Im set up I cant seem to hit the "danger zone". Damn I need a DTT, and a quadzilla or tst, hell twins would kick *** too!!
