Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Exhaust Gas Temperature?

Finally installed my gauges this past weekend.



The EGT is reading about 450 degrees when cruising on the highway with no load at about 70mph. This is on a flat level road, just cruising along.



I placed the pyro in the plate that covers the hole where the EGR tube used to be. This will only monitor the two rear exhaust ports as opposed to getting all three if you mount it where the flange bolts to the turbo.



A friend with a 93 mounted in the manifold near the turbo is reading close to the same temps I get but another friend with a 24 valve post turbo seems to think that my temps are way too low.



Anyone able to tell me what the normal temps should be, loaded, unloaded, etc. ?

I think your numbers are low also

On my '95s empty with the probe in the lower part of the manifold I read 600-750 empty and 700-900 loaded.

On flat level ground, no wind and 70 mph mine runs between 600-700

Sounds like I'm reading lower than I should. I talked with a few guys at our local Ram Runners meeting last night and they said the same thing.



The only suggestion was that maybe since I placed the probe in the EGR port block off plate the probe is not reaching down into the stream of hot gas so it's only reading a pocket of air that is trapped above the flow.



Is it real critical to be right in the flow as opposed to sitting above it?

My probe is in the same location as yours. I adjusted the probe to sit 1/4" off the bottom. EGT`s read 650 -700 at 65-70 mph. Try lowering the probe. If this does not work check connections.

I can't adjust my probe depth. Mine is probably about an inch above the center of the exhaust manifold which I believe is not down low enough into the flow of the exhaust gases.



I will try to relocate to the manifold near the turbo so I can get it in deeper.



Hopefully this will give me readings more like what everyone else is seeing.
