I recently had a Dr. Performance phase III installed in my 95' Dodge Ram 4x4 -- 3/4 ton. When pulling my 13,000 lb 5th wheel up a grade I experience easily 1200 degree egt's. I also am approaching red line on engine temperature (230 degrees). The power has improved 3-fold, but engine temps and egt temps. Any suggestions on how to knck down egt and engine temps???

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

dr p advertises that egt will not increase. big lie.

anyway a boost elbow to up boost by restricting the wastegate should lower egt 200 degrees. it did mine.

improve air intake and go 4 inch straight pipe to remove a lot more heat.

??

I fogot to mention we had the 4" exhaust installed already.

I'm not sure what you are talking about with the "elbow" -- I am a newbie here who just wants to pull my 5th wheel successfully.

Thanks for the reply -- more info or direction would be great.

When pulling up grades I still have more gas pedal, but need to back off due to egt's.

the elbow is a small fitting on the turbo to let off excess boost presure. an aftermarket elbow has a smaller hole in it to restrict the flow and bring boost pressure up for more cooling. the elbow just screws on in 2 minutes. it lowered my egt nearly 200 degrees. my boost went from 21 to 31 psi. just right. practical solutions is just 1 co. that sells these.

also check out the thread on tdr about the big honkin air filter. it helps egt.

i have the k and n cone filter with a heat sheild and 2 4 inch holes cut in the cowl with the air directed on the filter. this helps too.

Do you hear your fan roaring when the temp gets to 230? If not, check your viscous fan clutch. It may not be engaging. Your '95 probably has more than 80K miles on it. Those clutches usually don't last much more than 80K-100K miles. Also, your t-stat might need replacing.

Pulling a proper amount of air through the radiator will reduce EGT, by cooling the charge air. How much, I can't say. If your fan isn't working, *all* temps go up: oil, auto trans, coolant, EGT. They're all cooled by air flowing through the radiators. (The oil is cooled with coolant via an exchanger behind the oil filter mount. I believe the auto trans has a coolant exchange as well. )

Did they advance your injection timing with the kit installation? My local guy recommends a pretty high advance (18-21° BTDC) on the early pumps. I think our resident 12 valve gurus state the same.

I usually pull back to about 1200 degrees when my EGT's hit the 1300 mark. I will see 230 temp's on my engine oil but my water temp stays at 190. For sure, as mm suggested, check out the BHAF. If the fan clutch proves okay, you might try to rig up another water temp guage for a sanity check.

I havnt towed yet but the BHAF (Moparguy) filter made a big difference in EGT on my truck on full throttle runs. B4 the big filter I could hit 1400 real easy just on city streets, it would go up about as fast as the boost gauge After the BHAF install it will still hit 1400 but only on the highway when I have room to hit 2900 rpm in 4th. It goes up real slow compared to B4 and hits 1400 just when I need to shift anyway. A real effective mod for the money. :D

Dan007,

I had the same problem. When I first got the truck, I had high engine temps pulling my 22' tt. Someone told me to change the thermostat. I changed the thermostat and have never had a problem with heat since. I then bought a 26' 5er weighing 10,000 lbs and my EGT's would hit 1250 going up a 6-7% grade. I was told to put a boost module and elbow in to correct the problem. I also have the VA and a 4" exhaust. With Practical Solutions boost module and elbow, I get 28 lbs of boost and my exhuast temps are down about 200. Hope this helps.
