ANOTHER fan question.

OK all - especially Joe - *I* have an EARLY '91 (see sig for current mods), and for future mods, am interested in torque converter/transmission upgrade, larger injectors, and the 14 cm turbo housing. I will be doing significant towing with about an 8000 load, steep, long grades. Current EGTS at 20 lbs boost run about 1150-1200. What boost and EGTS will I likely see with the new turbo housing alone - and what after the appropriate injector upgrades - and what would be the suggested injectors for my application. Finally, is the wastegate and associated downpipe modification required for my application. or is there even a choice?

All knowledgeable replies gratefully accepted!

Knowledgeable attempt...

Gary, on my 1992 I have been running the lil' 12cm^2 housing and see tops 25lbs of boost and egt's never go over 1125ish. I do not have performance injectors (like to though) and actually do not know where the fuel is exactally, but it is up from stock.

I pull an equipment trailer daily that is between 4000-6000lbs and on weekends now I am towing an enclosed 28' 8000lb trailer. Of course I need more power, but coming from the 21cm^2 with the same fueling, now I have no smoke at WOT under load, and only get puffs at lower RPM's because I am lazy and have not tinkered with the AFC low setting. Am I over boosting... . I think I am, and I do worry, but I need to either turn up fuel or turn down wastegate

I am running a 3" downpipe into 3. 5" exhaust with a racing muffler. Gary, I don't remember what size you run, but I wish I had built a 4" system.

I think with what you have done to your engine the wastegate would be a good idea and might help you fine tune your set-up like mine would if I would adjust it :D Whatever I have said that is wrong here please yell at me about it, I am just trying to help and learn more :)

Thanks again Joe.

I appreciate the fact that you stick to the uqestions at hand rather than bench racing off the topic.

16cm2 housing

Does anyone have a 16 housing they don't need anymore??

I am in the market for one, PM me if you have one for sale.

Michael

16 housing

Joe will a stock housing on my 96 with waste gate outperform a 16 non wasted? I just had a Goerend triple installed. I have a #6 TST plate in its stock location.

The early first gen intercooled Rams had a 21 cm2 housing. Very doggy. The others had the 18. 5, much better. The 16 is optimum, a big gain over the 21, moderate gain over the 18. 5. The bigger housings make more horsepower at upper rpm, say over 2000. The 12 is spool up king but after that initial jolt, they don't flow the exhaust out as well as the bigger housings. SEcond gen trucks seem to like the 16 unless they have too tight a stall speed in the torque converter. first gen, maybe the 14 is a better compromise as they don't get as much fuel. However, the wastegated 14 is a tight fit to the firewall. That housing is also expensive, so the 16 is a good compromise. The nonwastegated 14 might be worth trying on a first gen with moderate fueling and stock governor setting.
