went to eliminate my muffler yesterday, i must say i'm really surprised on how decent it sounds. meaning i was a little scared on how the pitch would be since it's the 3gen kind. you can now here the turbo through my exhaust and it is awesome, mind u this is w/out an afternmarket intake yet, cant imagine what it will sound like after i install my afe intake. anyway, my real q's is why r so many of u spending 300-700 on ss systems u cant even c the exhaust except for the tailpipe. why dont just go w/ an aluminum system? cheaper and it will last along time especially since our ctd coats the inside w/ an oil film anyway. remember upgrading to an complete 4" exhaust will help but remember the sz of the turbo outlet... . straight piped it and put a magnaflow 5" tip on it all for 125. 00, many of u probably can do even better than that.

just my . 02..... happy truckiin

I will upgrade to stainless eventually, because I hate rust. I've never met an aluminized tube that road salt couldn't eat through!

i have been down the road you are on one too many times. It is much easier and cheaper in the long run too install a quality part the first time. The same holds true for the exhaust system, Stainless will stick around for as long as I have the truck, Any other system starts it's demise as soon as you start the truck. And rest assured, know one buys a Stainless Steel exhaust system to look at, it is nice to know it's polished, but the only time anyone See's it is while on a lift. And yes they will all come over and admire it's shine, but that is secondary to why it is purchased. Also some people like to show there trucks, and it's nice to have the BLING, BLING.

Your aluminized tubing, is just a Fancy way of saying it will rust out. There is little to be gained by it's use, mainly I believe it's a marketing tool. People hear aluminum, and think rust resistant, I have had aluminized systems rust Thur in less then two years, no more. I have seen several SS systems for under 500, but yes they will cost a little more, but not so much as to make them un-affordable. In the end it's what ever floats your boat, for me changing exhaust systems every few years isn't one of them.

A nice heavy coat of paint will help keep them from rusting too. Especially where there is exposed carbon steel, like on welds. Paint won't burn off a diesel exhaust like it will a gasoline exhaust - much less heat loss.

Stainless is still the best, but a quick coat of paint will help a non-stainless exhaust last longer.

We already have a stainless exhaust from the factory!!!

As long as that turbo housing to pipe adapter is there, the system isn't going to perform any better than the stock exhaust, with a good muffler.

Save your pennys and just replace the muffler.

Waste of money on a new 4". Unless you need it for bragging rights...

It may be a 400 series stainless from the turbo to the muffler, but the rest is not. I'm not even sure if any of it is stainless. My 95 had stainless to the cat, but no cat on the 03.

I'm confused about the stainless systems... ... .

I have had 6 first gen pickups, none of which were pampered, to say the least; all have topped 200K by now. They all still had the original system, with no rust, corrosion, or anything of that nature. 5 of them still looked near new. One even came from Chicago. Granted, a bolt had corroded through, but not the pipe itself. Is aluminized really that crappy? Maybe I should have gone with stainless for my custom system.

Okay, Stainless is not rustless, hence the name. your kitchen stailess sink can and will rust, so it is not rustless:-{} How bout them apples. LOL

Good stainless exhaust will be made from 304, which will not rust at all. The stainless downpipes they use (or used) are made from a 400 series stainless, which will rust on the surface.

I love my quiet truck:) , BUT... ... ... ... ... ... ... ..... my salesman stopped at the house Friday and he was with a customer that had an '03 6-speed that had it's muffler removed. I took it for a ride and the cab noise was not bad at all and when they left, it sure sounded impressive. I am not going to do that, but the thought of sending to Geno's for the $96 muffler elimination kit went through my mind.

Hello all,

Been a TDR member for over a year, and really enjoy the forums, but have never sent in a post or reply yet. I recently installed both an AFE Pro-Guard 7 system and the Geno's muffler elim pipe. Bottom line is a noticeable performance increase with only a little additional intake/exhaust noise. I say that with admitting I've yet to tow my brand-new 23' toy hauler. I should be doing that in approx one month; fully-loaded and with my three ATVs. I expect the intake/exhaust upgrades will result in good towing performance!

I drove an '03' six speed last week that had the elim pipe and it sounded pretty nice. The cab noise wasn't that bad at all and it sounded like a Peterbilt when he took off up the hill from my house. Not for me, but it did sound great.

there will always be as many opinions as there are people... I heard a straight piped 3rd gen not long after they were released and loved it, so for me the ones saying they sounded terrible I thought were a little strange... . back to topic... I would for sure not buy stainless since no one hardly ever looks under my truck and second I cant aford it and out here in southern utah an aluminized pipe will out live my children, (basicly no road salt ever and low humidity). In fact most of my custom exaust is regular nonaluminized pipe and its rusty colored but far from rusting through, got to love diesels. $0. 02 or less worth.

hello everybody i'm back, the original thread producer. i totally agree w jim. s. everybody has a different preception as to what sounds good and what doesn't. for me i think it sounds really good. there is no question that it is loud, to me it sounds very similar to a mack truck, and again i can't over emphasize on the turbo noise, you hear it clearly through the exhaust and wait to you back off on the go pedal or shift like mine, in addition i'll be adding an afe intake and torque tube next week, heard it will really scream w/ these add on's. i might also add that i still have my silencer ring in, and don't thing i'll take it out either.
